Beloved youth counselor is beaten to death by 16-year-old boy at department of corrections school

A beloved youth counselor at the boys’ prison in Wisconsin has died after allegedly being attacked by a teenager.

Javaris Hurd, 16, is accused of assaulting two Lincoln Hills Copper Lake School staff members, killing 49-year-old Corey Proulx, who is also a counselor for the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.

Hurd, who will appear in court as an adult, is charged with second-degree manslaughter, first-degree murder (assault under special circumstances) and prisoner abuse.

If the suspect is found guilty of all charges, he could be sentenced to 58 years in prison and pay a $120,000 fine.

The suspect allegedly threw liquid soap and struck a woman in the face in the lower day room of the Krueger Living complex on June 24, seriously injuring her.

While making his way to the courtyard, Hurd allegedly came face to face with Proulx, whom he punched twice, according to the complaint.

Reports indicate that the punches caused the youth counselor to fall to the ground and hit his head on the sidewalk, leaving him incapacitated.

While Proulx lay on the ground, Hurd climbed onto the basketball hoop and sat on the hoop overlooking the courtyard.

Officials on the scene airlifted Proulx to Aspirus Wausau Hospital and the woman was transported to Aspirus Merrill Hospital for treatment.

But due to the severity of his injuries, Proulx was declared brain dead by the Lincoln County coroner on June 25.

ABC news reports that the victim succumbed to his injuries and died that day, according to the Department of Corrections.

The female victim was treated and later released from the hospital.

During interrogation, Hurd told investigators that he had built up aggression toward the female staff member because he believed she was abusing her power and treating him unfairly.

The youth reportedly said he planned to attack her and asked another youth to get the cup of soap from the staff so he could throw it.

Jared Hoy, the secretary of the Department of Corrections, noted that Proulx was a “dedicated professional and friend.”

“It is with immense sadness and regret that I announce the loss of a dedicated professional, colleague and friend in the line of duty,” said Jared Hoy, Secretary of the Department of Corrections (DOC).

“A career in corrections, with its dual mission to protect the public and guide individuals to rehabilitation, can be demanding and requires so many sacrifices for our staff and our families, and Corey made the ultimate sacrifice. Our DOC family mourns the loss of Corey and we are keeping all his family members and friends in our thoughts,” he said in a news release.

The victim’s fiancée and daughter also described him as ‘a wonderful partner, father, son and person’.

Lincoln Hills School Superintendent Klint Trevino also remembered Prolux: “Corey was a dedicated and compassionate member of our team who always strived to make a positive impact on the lives of the young people we serve.

“His commitment to our mission was unwavering and he will be deeply missed by all of us.”

Hurd is currently being held in the Lincoln County Jail on a $100,000 bond and was ordered yesterday to have no contact with the victims, their family members, their workplace or education.

He has also been told not to contact school staff.
