Beloved ARIA award-winning singer dead at 55 after long battle with cancer

Beloved ARIA Award-winning singer Zulya Kamalova passed away on Wednesday at the age of 55 after a long battle with cancer.

The singer was born in Russia in 1969 and moved to Melbourne in 1991, where she lived and performed for many years.

Her music producer Alexander Cheparukhin confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media.

“Zulya left us today, shortly after her 55th birthday. In her last hours she was with her daughter and her husband,” he wrote.

‘I last spoke to her early last week. She did not lose hope for a miracle. She was grateful to all of us who helped her give people beautiful songs.

‘Zulya was a very good, smart, sincere and beautiful person. All these last weeks I listened to her music again. She sang in many languages, may her voice live. Blessed memory.’

Kamalova brought a unique style of world music to thousands of fans during her celebrated career, which she began in Australia in 1992.

Her contributions to the music industry were publicly recognised in 2007 when she won an ARIA Award for Best World Music Album for her LP 3 Nights.

Kamalova released six albums, all of which sold well in Europe and were acclaimed in Australia’s international community.

In 2003 she was also nominated for the same category for her album Elusive, but she lost to the Sydney band Monsieur Camembert.

The talented artist has spoken candidly about her health issues with her 8,100 Instagram followers. In her last post a week ago, she reflected on the view from her hospital room window.

“The sunset looks pretty apocalyptic from the hospital room. But spectacular,” she wrote alongside a photo of the city skyline.

“Appreciate the present moment, for there is no other moment than the present.”

Kamalova is survived by her husband Andrew and their daughter Zifa.
