Behold the 20-foot-tall Donkey Kong arcade game
Donkey Kong is a big boy, who only deserves the biggest arcade cabinet. And that’s exactly what Mr. Kong gets, thanks to the Strong National Museum of Play. The Strong One is creating a 6 meters high, fully playable Donkey Kong arcade machine — in partnership with Nintendo — which will be on display in the museum’s new 90,000-square-foot extension dedicated to the history of video games. This new expansion will open on June 30.
Feast your eyes on the display and wince with fear (or excitement):
According to the release, it will be the largest in the world Donkey Kong arcade game. I’m inclined to believe that’s true, given the machine’s wild display image. It will be about 370% bigger than the original arcade game. The arcade machine has an aluminum frame with MDF fiberboard and runs on an original motherboard Donkey Kong arcade machine. And they will show it off as the crown jewel it is: it will be visible from the museum’s first-floor welcome atrium.
“Donkey Kong is a true titan in the video game world, both in terms of character size and iconic status of the game, so it lends itself perfectly to this playful, whimsical installation,” said Jon-Paul Dyson, PhD, vice president for exhibitions at De Strong.
Fortunately, you don’t need hands 370% larger than normal human hands to play the massive arcade game. While it looks like there will be giant controls on a panel – scaled to the huge machine – at least according to the arcade machine’s rendering, players will interact with it through normal-sized controls on a pedestal in front of the machine. I just know it’s my destiny to experience this personally.
