Bee Gees and Abba’s baggy jeans are back – ALEXANDRA SHULMAN explains why

The 70s called – they want their flares back! The Bee Gees and Abba’s baggy jeans have made a comeback – ALEXANDRA SHULMAN explains why

  • Oscar winner Rachel Weisz was seen in London last week with a trendy pair

It’s a retro look that reminds us of when Abba and the Bee Gees ruled the charts.

Oscar winner Rachel Weisz brought some 1970s cool to London last week, seen in a pair of high-waisted jeans on her way to Soho restaurant Quo Vadis.

The British actress, who is married to James Bond actor Daniel Craig, is currently starring in Amazon’s TV remake of David Cronenberg’s 1988 scary film Dead Ringers.

But it’s another Amazon series, Daisy Jones & The Six – inspired by Fleetwood Mac and starring Elvis’ granddaughter Riley Keough – that’s driving the new craze.

Weisz, 53, who plays identical twin gynecologists in Dead Ringers, rocked the retro look adopted by a string of other A-list celebrities in recent weeks.

Among them is Barbie actress Margot Robbie, who paired her blue flares with a bikini top at a red carpet event in Los Angeles last month. However, pop superstar Jennifer Lopez opted for a brown corduroy pair while running errands while also in LA.

Fashion judgement

The sight of some of the world’s most glamorous women in saggy, baggy denim will be painful for skinny jeans aficionados. But flared, high-waisted flares are the shape of summer.

I understand the attraction. For those of us who were teenagers in the 1970s, there is a nostalgic memory of lying on the floor and desperately pulling the zippers of our goofy pants. The tighter the fit around the hips, the wider the trendy flares appeared. Margot Robbie’s Chanel jeans, paired with a tiny bra top and shimmering bolero, are pure Laurel Canyon – the insanely cool Hollywood Hills zip code of the era.

Rachel Weisz has another period style item on her arm: the brown suede jacket. While J Lo’s velvet hipster flares, skinny crop top and huge buckle belt are 1970s gold.

The revival of the mood of a disheveled troubadour is enhanced by TV’s Daisy Jones & The Six – a drama about the tumultuous lives and loves of a fictional Fleetwood Mac-esque band.

The appeal lies in their lack of any hint of conventional glamour. It’s not just a trend for the everyday people of New York and California. M&S’ best-selling jean style this summer is, guess what, high-waisted, wide-leg, faded denim. That’s fashion.
