Beckham Netflix documentary director admits it was ‘uncomfortable’ asking David and Victoria about the ‘problems’ of their marriage
The director of the new Beckham Netflix documentary has admitted it was ‘uncomfortable’ asking David and Victoria about the ‘problems’ of their marriage.
The fashion designer, 49, and the former footballer, 48, have been married for 24 years since first meeting in 1997.
But in a new four-part tell-all about the former England player, the power couple lifts the lid on their highly publicized relationship, including the tougher parts of their marriage and ‘rumors of infidelity scandals’.
And when conducting the difficult interrogation, director Fisher Stevens revealed: ‘It wasn’t pleasant, but we dealt with it.’
Speak with The Sunday times, he said, “For me, I approached it as, ‘How did your marriage survive?’ and you will see how he reacts.
Candid: The director of the new Beckham Netflix documentary has admitted it was ‘uncomfortable’ to ask David and Victoria about the ‘problems’ of their marriage
Honest: While conducting the difficult interrogation, director Fisher Stevens revealed: ‘it wasn’t pleasant, but we got into it’
“I spoke to both of them about the difficulties they went through.”
Producer John Battsek added, “They were both willing to tell us what we wanted to know. I’m sure you’ll say, “Of course you would.” But they were. There was no, “You won’t ask or do that.”
“Fisher and I thought that might be the case, but we were clear from the start that we would only do this if we could go in any direction we wanted. And we did that.’
Elsewhere in the documentary, Victoria and David lift the lid on their initial attraction to each other.
The pair met at a charity football match in 1997 and have now given insight into that first meeting and what they thought of each other.
Victoria showed off her relaxed side as she sat on a couch in a new teaser clip: “The fact that I went to the Games was really about – some might say I was stalking him, I would say see him.”
Victoria admitted that when she saw David at the bar in the Manchester United players’ lounge after a match, he caught her attention because he was with his parents and was clearly a family man.
She said: ‘When I saw him in the footballers’ lounge, all the other footballers were sitting at the bar, and he was standing talking to his parents, and I’m very close to my family, and I loved that side of him.’

Happy couple: David says about meeting Victoria: ‘I just liked her’
Giving his side of the story, David simply said of their first meeting, “I just liked her.”
While Victoria said: ‘I just liked him, it was that simple.’
It turned out to be love at first sight for the couple, who tied the knot just two years later in 1999 in a castle outside Dublin.
They now share four children — sons Brooklyn, 24, Romeo, 21, Cruz, 18, and daughter Harper, 12 — and are as loved as ever after 24 years of marriage.
Their romance wasn’t always smooth sailing, however, as David’s mum Sandra revealed she feared her son would ‘lose everything’ when he started dating Victoria.
In the upcoming Beckham documentary, Sandra confessed that she feared David would be sidetracked from his career at Manchester United when Spice Girl Victoria arrived on the scene.
She said: ‘We were worried he would lose everything he worked for because football had always come first and suddenly that wasn’t the case anymore.’
But David and Victoria instead became a brand, winning lucrative contracts with clothing designers, health and fitness specialists, fashion magazines and perfume and cosmetics manufacturers.
Despite now being a power couple, Victoria said at the start of her relationship with David that her then-manager told her at the time to “keep it a secret.”

She said: ‘We met in car parks and it’s not as shady as it sounds.’
Complementing her comment, David joked: “Stylish!”
Victoria also revealed she was in the middle of the ‘circus’ – with shocking footage showing one of their children crying as fans banged on their cars as they drove past.
In the clip, David – who was driving while Victoria sat in the back – said: ‘It’s okay, Buster. They can’t get in the car.’
Looking back on that period, Victoria added: ‘It’s entertaining when the circus comes to town, isn’t it? Unless you’re involved.’
Elsewhere, David appears to have a conflicting opinion towards his former Man United manager Alex Ferguson, as he says of how his fame was quickly catapulted due to interest in his relationship with Victoria: ‘It hasn’t changed me at all.’
Alex, 81, then said: ‘Well, he’s changed. There’s no doubt about that.’
The new Netflix documentary, which tells the inside story of David Beckham’s career, will be released on October 4.
An emotional David Beckham says he didn’t ‘sleep’ or ‘eat’ after being blamed for England’s 1998 World Cup as he retells the story in new Netflix documentary.
The football star, now 48, was sent off against Argentina after kicking the back of Diego Simeone’s leg and lunging at the Argentina captain after pushing him to the ground.
Secret romance: Early in her relationship with David, Victoria says her then-manager told her to ‘keep it a secret’
Sensational clips from the program feature his wife Victoria, legendary Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, his parents and his former club and England teammates Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand.
And the documentary seems to go into unprecedented depth as it covers the tensions and pressures that dogged Beckham and his family throughout their professional careers.
Speaking about the 1998 World Cup exit, he says: ‘I don’t think I’ve ever talked about it just because I can’t do it.
‘I wasn’t eating. I didn’t sleep. It has taken a toll on me that I never even knew.”
The documentary promises the former England international’s rise from ‘humble working-class beginnings’ to his glamorous days at Manchester United, Real Madrid and beyond.
Further clips show heartwarming home videos of their children and wedding day, alongside resurfaced interviews with the star in his prime.
From the trailer alone, it seems like a lot of it will be focused on his relationships, both off and on the field.
Following England’s eighth leg defeat, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid winger had to watch as England lost the match on penalties.
The footballer was continuously booed and jeered by fans of opposition clubs for most of the following 1998/99 season, with a burning effigy of him and death threats being among the worst reactions to his red card.
Beckham also addresses the famous dressing room incident between himself and Sir Alex Ferguson, which saw the United coach allegedly kick a boot at the England star.
He appears to admit that he ‘went to his manager’ after the incident as he discusses the controversy with an interviewer.
Netflix promises that “the series will take you on that rollercoaster ride and build a surprising, personal and definitive story of one of the most recognizable and researched athletes of all time.”
This includes Beckham’s relationship with his wife Victoria, as they follow their family life throughout his career.
Since retiring from the sport, ‘Becks’ has taken on a number of ambitions, including his role as owner at MLS side Inter Miami.
Earlier this summer, the club secured one of the most sensational transfers in football history when Beckham convinced Lionel Messi to join the club.
