Beauty queen’s fiancé is jailed by her Kyrgyzstan president uncle after his ’embarrassingly ostentatious’ wedding proposal in country hit by mudslides
The former Miss Kyrgyzstan saw her fiancé locked up by her uncle, the country’s president, after his “embarrassingly ostentatious” proposal.
Sadyr Dzhaparov was furious with Aftandil Sabyrbekov after he used a government helicopter as part of an elaborate marriage proposal to the president’s niece, Lazzat Nurgozhoeva, 23.
Mr Dzhaparov immediately issued a statement condemning the proposal and suggesting that Ms Nurgozhoeva “draw the right conclusions from this”.
However, after two weeks without an apology from the new husband-to-be, the president lost patience and ordered the arrest of Mr Sabyrbekov on charges of drug possession. The Telegraph reported.
This came at a time when Kyrgyzstan was hit by mudslides and floods, killing dozens of people.

Mr. Dzhaparov not only ordered the arrest of his future family member, but also told the media that Mr. Sabyrbekov did not love the former beautician. He said he made the proposal only to protect himself from future arrest.
In Kyrgyzstan, a conviction for drug possession typically results in years of imprisonment.
The engagement video shows the couple standing on a hilltop, having arrived by emergency helicopter at a cost of £1,500 an hour, despite the extreme weather the country has experienced this month.
They walked from the helicopter to a fireworks display, watching the message: “Will you marry me?”
Kyrgyzstan’s president has made it a point to curb wasteful public spending since coming to power in a coup in 2020, a video of which quickly went viral in the country.
Ms Nurgozhoeva, who was Miss Kyrgyzstan in 2020, subsequently deleted the clip from her social media.
Earlier this month, a state of emergency was declared in the southern city of Osh in Kyrgyzstan after mudslides and flooding killed at least four people, among more than a dozen people killed in similar weather events in recent months.
