It comes after Ewan revealed his changing views on parenthood after welcoming a baby with his new wife Mary.

The actor was married to his first wife Eve Mavrakis, 56, for 22 years and the couple have four daughters together. But in 2017, he was pictured kissing his Fargo co-star Mary Elizabeth, 37, which led to his divorce in 2020 and his second marriage in April this year.

Ewan and Mary share a son, Laurie, one, and the actor reflected on two decades of parenthood in a candid interview with British GQ, including his “difficult” period of estrangement from eldest daughter Clara.

The Scottish star explained how lockdown changed his perspective on balancing career and family, as he realized it had been decades since he stayed in one place for more than a few months.

'I just want to be there. I don't want to be away in Romania for four months,” he told GQ. “If it has to happen, maybe it has to happen, but I'm doing my best not to.”

Referring to the years spent raising his four daughters, Clara, 26, Jamyan, 20, Esther, 19, and 10-year-old Anouk, which coincided with his heady post-Trainspotting career, Ewan mused: 'I used to just feel that a gypsy. I was always a father first, but I was away a lot.'

Ewan and Mary first met on the set of their TV series Fargo in 2016, before the actress split from her husband of seven years Riley Stearns in May 2017. Ewan subsequently separated from Eve in January 2017 and filed for divorce.

Ewan and his eldest daughter Clara, 26, have had a rocky relationship since she called her father's second wife a “piece of trash” and her dad a “a hole” when the photos of them kissing first emerged.

The father and daughter have mended their relationship over the past five years and recently completed work on their first joint project.

You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder is a film created by Clara, in which Ewan explains his daughter's pitch to him: 'She tells me she has come up with an idea to write about us. At first I was a little nervous. I didn't know what that meant.'

Ewan was married to his first wife Eve Mavrakis, 56, for 22 years and the couple have four daughters together. But in 2017, he was pictured kissing Mary Elizabeth and they split, with the divorce finalized in 2020.

The film focuses on a father and daughter road trip, with Ewan's character taking his daughter, played by Clara, to rehab. Although the ride is fictional, the premise of a father trying to help his daughter is based on Clara's own experience.

“I sat down to read it and I was blown away. It was a nice story about us. There are things that are wrong or crooked, but that will continue to reflect our alienation for a while,” the actor explains.

'The ride is fictional. But for a few years we kind of lost her. So the storyline is about realizing that she needs the help that her father is trying to give. Gradually their relationship heals somewhat.'

'I was so impressed by the story, by the humor. There is a kind of recognition in it that made me very proud and at the same time very close to her. I felt like she understood more than I thought.”

When asked by GQ what he thought his daughter had understood, Ewan explained: “My point of view, but also things about raising someone who is in trouble. It's a terribly difficult situation to be in. You're so afraid of what might happen. You will do anything in the world to avoid losing them.”

Later, in a rare comment, he mused about his messy divorce from Clara's mother: “A divorce in a family is a bomb that goes off in everyone's life – my children's. The kind of healing of that is happening.”
