The Tourist records as the most-watched TV drama of the year, surpassing Trigger Point and the ‘canoe man’ show for the top spot

The most watched drama of 2022 was The Tourist, the BBC revealed.

The thriller series stars Jamie Dornan as a car accident victim in the Australian outback who wakes up with no memory.

The BBC took seven places in this year’s top ten list, while ITV took the other three. However, neither drama captured the public imagination on the scale of 2021’s Line Of Duty.

The police show finale garnered 12.8 million viewers the night it aired, more than any show on this year’s list in 28 days.

In second place was the hit ITV drama Trigger Point, starring Vicky McClure (pictured) as explosives operator Lana Washington.  The series focuses on Expo officials who risk their lives daily on 'the long walk' into danger and has been praised by viewers.

The ITV1 drama The Thief, His Wife And The Canoe attracted 10.1 million viewers on Easter Sunday and starred Eddie Marsan and Monica Dolan as con men John Darwin and his wife Anne.  Darwin famously faked his own death for two years in an attempt to cheat insurers out of hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The most broadcast programs were the following:

  1. The Tourist (BBC1) – 11.4 million viewers
  2. Trigger Point (ITV1) – 10.9 million viewers
  3. The thief, his wife and the canoe (ITV1) – 10.1 million viewers
  4. The Responder (BBC1) – 9.5 million viewers
  5. Death in Paradise (BBC1) – 9.1 million viewers
  6. SAS Rogue Heroes (BBC1) – 9 million viewers
  7. Call the Midwife (BBC1) – 8.7 million viewers
  8. Sherwood (BBC1) – 8.6 million viewers
  9. Silent Witness (BBC1) – 8.2 million viewers
  10. Out House (ITV1) – 8 million viewers

ITV came second and third in the 2022 list with the thriller Trigger Point starring Vicky McClure earning $10.9 million and The Thief, His Wife And The Canoe based on a true story of a man faking his death, got 10.1 million.

BBC1 crime drama The Responder, starring Martin Freeman, came in fourth with 9.5 million, while crime series Death In Paradise was next with 9.1 million.

The BBC’s recent hit SAS Rogue Heroes was in sixth place with nine million, followed by Call The Midwife, Sherwood and Silent Witness which had over eight million.

The ITV thriller Our House was tenth with eight million viewers. Despite their huge budgets, none of the major US streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ made the list.

The figures are based on the main episode of each series during the first 28 days of viewing and include data from services such as iPlayer and ITVX.
