Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin become the latest Aussie A-listers to list their New York property… after Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Less Furness put their $55million New York penthouse a year before split

Baz Luhrmann and his wife Catherine Martin have listed their Gilded Age townhouse in New York for $28 million.

The Australian couple originally listed the property last year for $31 million and were also offered rent for $117,000 a month.

Luhrmann, best known for iconic films like Elvis, The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge!, and his Oscar-winning wife purchased the 8,000-square-foot home in 2017 for $21 million before renovating it two years later.

The property, originally built in 1852, has six spacious bedrooms, five bathrooms, two powder rooms and five fireplaces.

The reason Luhrmann and Martin are selling is to return home to Australia and establish their main base.

“Since the pandemic and making the Elvis movie in Australia, our work has kept us mostly away from our base in New York,” Luhrmann said. New York Post‘s Give me refuge.

“We filmed Elvis entirely on the Gold Coast in Queensland and will continue to develop shows filmed there.

The couple, married for more than 26 years, could potentially downsize in their country. The filmmaker said they “became empty nesters” as their children – Lilly, 19, and son William, 18 – grew up.

“Our huge, beautiful family home seems very quiet without our children,” Luhrmann added.

The garden has an intimate space perfect for entertaining and dining al fresco. But there is also a formal living and dining room located to the front of the property and featuring a wood burning fireplace.

At the top of the floating curved staircase is the second floor, known as the living room floor, which houses the master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, dressing room and private terrace.

On the third floor, more bedrooms, as well as a laundry room and living room.

The fourth floor now includes a casual lounge with a bar, gym, bedroom and bathroom – the area being known as Luhrmann’s creative space where he wrote Elvis.

Luhrmann and Martin aren’t the only Australian couple to list their New York home in the past year.

In June 2022, Hugh Jackman and his ex-wife Deborra-Lee Furness listed their $54.2 million five-bedroom triplex with stunning views of the nearby Hudson River.

The couple then downsized in New York to a smaller location in Chelsea.

Jackman, who starred in Luhrmann’s 2008 film Australia, and Furness have announced their separation after 27 years of marriage.

“We were fortunate to share nearly three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful and loving marriage. Our journey is now changing and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth,” the couple said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

“Our family has been and always will be our biggest priority. We begin this next chapter with gratitude, love and kindness,” he continued.

Theories began circulating that Hugh and Deborra-Lee had already started splitting their property portfolio after putting their “dream” home on the rental market in January.

They also downsized their $54.2 million triplex apartment in New York for a smaller unit in Chelsea.
