Bayview, Sydney’s Northern Beaches: P-plater, 17, is charged over death of 16-year-old killed in horror crash
The 17-year-old behind the wheel of a Toyota who crashed into a tree, killing a 16-year-old, has been charged with a series of offenses and had his driver’s license suspended.
Emergency services were called to Cabbage Tree Road in Bayview on Sydney’s northern beaches after reports a gray HiLux ute crashed into a tree at about 12.20pm on October 7.
Six teenage boys were seriously injured in the crash and rushed to hospital.
Cohen Griggs-Bufton, 16, who was a front seat passenger, died in hospital and five others were injured.
The P-plate driver, who cannot be named due to his age, was flown to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.
He was arrested Thursday at a home in Bayview and has been charged with 10 offenses, including dangerous driving causing death and negligent driving.

His license has also been suspended.
A local resident who called triple-zero described hearing two loud bangs and then went to investigate. He found the wreckage and two boys who had “withered” up the side of the road.
Flowers, along with two skateboards, were left in a makeshift memorial at the base of the tree for Cohen in the days after the crash.
Messages of love and sadness were written on the back of the skateboards, including one that read: “Love ya mate, rest easy.”
Friends and loved ones gathered at Cohen’s funeral in Pittwater on October 21 to say goodbye to the “cheeky, lovable” teen.
His mother Lindy Griggs fought back tears as she made a powerful plea to his friends and classmates.
Mrs Griggs said the past two weeks have felt like a lifetime and life will never be the same.

‘We count every breath. You brought us so much joy, so sassy and so sweet,” she said.
‘And for a fleeting moment he is still there, but then comes the fear and the longing feeling that something is missing.
“My beautiful boy, I will never forget your precious smile, or how you lit up the room.”
The driver was granted bail and will appear in the juvenile court on January 10.
