An Arab commentator has raised his eyebrows after appearing to call Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano ‘UpaMaguire’ during the German’s Champions League foray to Manchester City.

The French centre-back had to endure another night to forget against Pep Guardiola’s men as Man City swept aside the German champions to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

And Upamecano’s misfortune on the night was further emphasized when the commentator mispronounced the central defender’s name.

Instead, they chose to call him ‘UpaMaguire’, clearly comparing the France international’s performance to that of hapless Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.

Having already endured a disastrous first leg match as Manchester City won 3–0, Upamecano’s quarter-final woes were completed in the second leg as he was penalized first and booked for a handball, earning Manchester City a penalty in the second leg. yielded in the first half.

Harry Maguire has struggled for form and action in the Manchester United first team this season

Then, after Erling Haaland kicked the penalty over the crossbar, it was the French defender’s slip that saw the City striker make amends and score the goal that all but confirmed Bayern’s exit from the competition – and saw his performance compared become with that of the United man.

Having struggled to secure a regular starting place under boss Erik ten Hag, Maguire has suffered a downturn in form after a number of high-profile mistakes for the Red Devils.

It is not the first time this season that the English defender has been wrongly targeted.

In December, Maguire’s name was bizarrely referenced by Ghanaian politician Isaac Adango when he compared the performance of the Man Utd centre-back to his rival’s economic policies.

Adango claimed that Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia enjoyed – politically – scoring own goals in much the same way as Harry Maguire and that his opponent “tackled his own players and gave assists to opponents” just like the center back.

He then explains his equation with a full explanation that ridicules the 30-year-old star.

Manchester United were going to buy him. He became the main threat in the center of Manchester United’s defence, tackling his own players and providing assists to opponents.

“Even when the opponents didn’t score, Maguire scored for them.

Mr. Speaker, you will remember that we also have an economic Maguire in this country.’

Maguire has made 26 appearances for United this season, but Ten Hag more often opted for his preferred options Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in the center of his defence.

Despite his struggles at club level, Maguire is still a constant for his country, playing in both England’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine last month, with Gareth Southgate staying loyal to the defender.
