  • Manchester United are keen to bring the Dutch central defender to Old Trafford
  • But there is currently no agreement between the two clubs on a deal

Uli Hoeness has confirmed that a defender could leave Bayern Munich in the coming weeks as Manchester United are keen to sign Matthijs De Ligt from the German club.

United were among the Premier League’s busiest recruiters during the summer transfer market, with both Joshua Zirkzee and defender Leny Yoro leaving for Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag is keen to reunite with his former Ajax captain De Ligt and made it public that United are interested in the centre-back ahead of their pre-season win over Rangers on Friday.

Former Bayern chairman Hoeness has since spoken out about United’s interest, but admitted he would be happy for the Dutchman to stay at the Bundesliga giants.

It was previously reported that De Ligt had agreed personal terms with the Manchester club as Ten Hag looks to bring in a second Dutch signing for the summer. However, there is currently no agreement between the two clubs.

Hoeness casually suggested that De Ligt could be on his way to the 13-time Premier League champions this summer, pointing out that the Dutchman has the same nationality as Ten Hag.

He also commented on the future of central defender Dayot Upamecano, whose current contract at the Allianz Arena only has two years left to run.

“It is possible that another defender will leave. De Ligt is Dutch, the coach at Man United is Dutch. I would have no problem if he stays,” he told the German journalist Maximilian Koch.

“Personally I wouldn’t sell Upamecano,” Hoeness added when giving his assessment of the players who could leave Munich.

De Ligt is currently enjoying an extended holiday following the Netherlands’ participation in Euro 2024, despite not playing a single match at the tournament.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed mixed success since joining Bayern from Juventus two years ago in a deal reportedly worth around £68million.

United are keen to offer the combative defender a long-term contract with the club as a sign of investment in a player who is looking to get back into top form after a few inconsistent years.
