Germany captain Manuel Neuer broke his leg while skiing during the ‘extra holiday’ time allotted after his country’s World Cup elimination.

The 36-year-old played every minute of Germany’s campaign in Qatar, which saw them knocked out of the group stage for the second successive tournament.

And, after Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann granted him extra time off, the veteran goalkeeper has confirmed that he has suffered an injury that will rule him out for the rest of the season.

In a social media postNeuer wrote: ‘Hey guys what can I say, the end of the year definitely could have gone better.

‘While I was trying to clear my head while ski touring, I suffered a broken lower leg. Yesterday’s operation went well. Many thanks to the doctors! However, it pains me to know that the current season is over for me. Take care of yourself! Your Manuel.

The Bayern players who were knocked out of the group stage were supposed to resume training at Sabener Straße this week, before Nagelsmann extended his vacation time.

Neuer chose to go skiing, in an attempt to clear his head after his embarrassing elimination, but will now miss the rest of the season with a broken leg.

The 36-year-old will be a huge loss for the Bundesliga giants, who are just four points clear in the league after a shaky first half of the season.

It comes as the latest bad news for the veteran goalkeeper, who is still dealing with Germany’s surprise early exit from the World Cup in Qatar.

A loss to Japan and a draw against Spain meant their win over Costa Rica in the final group game was meaningless after results elsewhere.

The national team has now underperformed in back-to-back World Cups following their embarrassing group stage elimination during the competition in 2018.

It was only last month that the goalkeeper made the shocking revelation that he was suffering from skin cancer and underwent surgery three times to counteract it.

Neuer took to Instagram to share that she’s been suffering from skin cancer and has now invested in a sun cream with tennis star Angelique Kerber.

He said in the video: ‘We both have a history of skin diseases. In my case, skin cancer on the face, which required three surgeries.’

Neuer, who underwent surgery three times in an effort to treat his cancer, still has the facial scar today.
