Bayern Munich were reduced to ten men in the second half of their Champions League defeat to Lazio, with Dayot Upamecano dismissed for a challenge on Lazio’s Gustav Isaksen, with a penalty awarded.

Upamecano was sent off in the 67th minute and his misery was compounded, with Ciro Immobile giving Lazio the lead from the penalty spot in the round of 16 first leg.

Bayern went into the match on the back of a 3-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and Upamecano’s red card made things more difficult for his side against Lazio.

Lazio eventually won 1–0, with Bayern having a lot of work to do in the second leg.

Mail Sport columnist Chris Sutton claimed the decision to send Upamecano was harsh.

Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live: ‘It was great work from Ciro Immobile. He rings wonderfully into the penalty area, turns and tries to get a shot away and the ball ends up in the path of Gustav Isaksen.

‘Isaksen goes to shoot and it is blocked by Dayot Upamecano. It’s a big challenge, but a red card seems tough to me. It was an attempt to actually win the ball.’

Defender Upamecano is now suspended for the second leg, which will take place on March 5.

Upamecano’s red card is the fourth he has received in his career, and his first in the Bundesliga.

In addition to their problems in the Champions League, Bayern are five points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
