Bathurst 1000 results: Shane van Gisbergen claims third Bathurst victory before heading to NASCAR

Shane van Gisbergen and Richie Stanaway have won the 60th Bathurst 1000.

The Red Bull drivers built a 10-second lead on lap 113, but the victory appeared to slip from their grasp just moments later when a Gisbergen reported difficulty with the brake pedal.

However, the Kiwi managed to stay out of the way and became the 60th Mount Panorama track champion.

It was his last race at Bathurst as a full-time Supercars driver before heading to America the following year to compete in NASCAR.

Van Gisbergen’s third Bathurst win put him level with Bathurst great Dick Johnson.

Brodie Kostecki and David Russell took second place after four long days of flying across the mountain, with Kostecki taking pole position and impressing in qualifying.

Third was taken by Anton De Pasquale and Tony D’Alberto, who led a clean race and briefly led from lap 65 during a series of strategic pit stops.

Chaz Mostert defended his fourth place from David Reynolds after the Penrite Mustang driver was penalized.

The harsh penalty was handed down after Reynolds’ car left the semi-car lane ahead of his previous position during the Safety Car on lap 31.

James Courtney was the last Mustang to finish in the top 10 with Bryce Fullwood, Will Brown, Jack Le Brocq and James Golding filling out the final spots in Camaros.

Only 16 of the 28 cars completed 161 laps as the Great Race finished in six hours and seven minutes.

Red Bull driver Broc Feeney and Red Bull co-driver/team captain Jamie Whincup missed out on a chance at the Bathurst podium after a gear failure with just 30 laps to go.

Van Gisbergen and Stanaway (above) were followed by Brodie Kostecki and David Russell in second, and Anton De Pasquale and Tony D’Alberto in third.

The devastating blow brought Feeney to tears.

‘I do not know what to say. I’m upset, – he said.

The track was coming to us… we were very fast there. This place is the best, but it can also be the worst. I am absolutely gutted.

‘It’s just about the roller coaster ride. I’m turning 21 in two weeks so hopefully I can come back to this place many times and have another shot at it.

The super free Wildcard team of Craig Lowndes and Zane Goddard finished 20 laps behind the leaders after a broken lower gear link forced Lowndes to pit on lap 18.

Andre Heimgartner and Dale Wood left the track on lap 68 after making tire contact with Scott Pye and crashing into the tire wall in the final corner earlier in the race.

Cam Waters and James Moffat were ejected from the race after causing their Monster Energy Mustang to crash at The Dipper on lap 70.

“Very disappointed, but I know I’m not the first person to do this and I won’t be the last,” Moffat said.

“Just disappointed in myself – I pride myself on not making mistakes like that.

“I feel sorry for the whole team, all the guys, I can see them, they’re back to work now trying to put it back together.

“We were definitely fighting with one, maybe both hands tied behind our backs today mate. It was difficult there, but that’s no excuse for what I did.’

The 2023 Supercar Championship will take place in Surfers Paradise from October 27 to October 29 for the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.
