Baseball legend Darryl Strawberry reveals he suffered a heart attack on Monday night – but ‘all is well’ and he is recovering in hospital with his family
Baseball legend Darryl Strawberry has revealed that he suffered a heart attack on Monday night, but is recovering well in hospital with his family by his side.
The 17-year Major League Baseball pro, who played for the Mets, Dodgers, Giants and Yankees, posted a photo from his sickbed just hours after the health crisis, which occurred on the eve of his 62nd birthday.
In a post on Instagram, he said: ‘I praise God for His amazing grace and loving mercy in saving my life tonight from a heart attack.
‘I am so happy and honored to report that everything is going well. I am so grateful to the medical team and staff at St. Joseph West in Lake St. Louis for responding so quickly and guiding me through a stent procedure that brought my heart to a total recovery!!!
“Your prayers are so absolutely appreciated as I continue to recover, in Jesus Name!”
In the photo next to the caption, Strawberry poses with two women, who appear to be his wife and daughter.
The former outfielder turns 62 on Tuesday, but will now likely spend his birthday in the hospital after suffering a heart attack hours earlier.
His number 18 will be retired by the New York Mets at Citi Field on June 18.
Strawberry began his career with the New York team in 1980 and spent eight years in Queens, where he was voted All-Star in each and won the World Series in 1986.
In 1991, he moved to the West Coast with the Los Angeles Dodgers before spending a season with the San Francisco Giants in 1994.
He moved back east to the Yankees for the 1995 season and won two more World Series with the Bronx Bombers, in 1996 and 1999 – his last season in the major leagues.
