“Australia loves you and will always be grateful for everything you’ve given us and I think Barry has a fighting spirit that he won’t give up anytime soon,” Ford said.

It comes just weeks after Humphries said he was in ‘pain’ after a fall in his home that forced him to have hip replacement surgery.

Humphries said the injury to his hip occurred when he tripped over a rug while reaching for a book.

Throughout his career, Barry – and his alter ego Edna – has met and charmed most of the royal family, from the late Queen Mother to King Charles III.

The Melbourne native has played beloved character Dame Edna since 1955.

He was only 21, a college dropout and aspiring artist when he created the persona for which he would later become world famous.

He has been married four times and has four children, including actress Tessa and journalist Oscar.
