Bargain-hunters go nuts for new mega-discount furniture store: ‘If Goodwill and Home Depot had a baby’

Discount shoppers can now rejoice: a huge retail and DIY store has opened in Washington state.

The Tacoma/Pierce County nonprofit Habitat for Humanity opened its fourth mega discount store Friday in Spanaway, near Tacoma. The store offers 17,500 square feet of discounted furniture, building materials, tools and more.

β€œIt’s like Goodwill and Home Depot having a baby,” said Chief Operating Officer Ed Dopp The News Tribune.

The location is one of four large discount stores the Washington-based nonprofit has opened.

Dopp said about 60 percent of the sales space is made up of furniture.

All four locations have drop-off points for people who want to clear out their old stuff before buying new stuff.

According to the nonprofit’s website, proceeds from the sales help build, renovate and repair homes in Pierce County.

The Spanaway store was a longtime dream for Dopp, who told The News Tribune earlier this year that he planned to open one in the area.

The nonprofit chose the Tacoma area in part because of the area’s concentration of residential homes.

The shops are open every day from 9am to 6pm and accept donations until 5:30pm.

All four locations also have donation centers that accept donations daily until 5:30 p.m.

The nonprofit is also completing the purchase and renovation of 80 public housing units once owned by the Tacoma Housing Authority.

According to Dopp, most of the homes are located near the newly opened store.

‘This [store opening] β€œIt helps us to be there, besides coming with the houses and being part of the community,” he said.

Dopp and other members of Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity plan to sell the renovated properties so the homes remain eligible for affordable housing in Pierce County.
