Barcelona have received a significant financial boost after Gavi suffered a serious injury with Spain last season.
After emerging as one of La Masia’s most highly praised graduates in recent years, the 20-year-old midfielder quickly became a key figure for both club and country.
However, while representing Spain in last year’s qualifier against Georgia for the 2024 European Championship, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury, which forced him to spend the rest of the season on the sidelines.
Barcelona would eventually finish second in LaLiga, ten points behind Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid, and be knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals by PSG.
Although Gavi’s injury had a significant impact on his club, Barca will receive significant compensation from FIFA for the time he was away.
Barcelona set to receive £5.8m in compensation from FIFA following Gavi’s (left) injury last year
Under FIFA rules, clubs can receive up to £16,000 per day in compensation if a player is injured on international duty
However, the Blaugrana will miss the add-ons from Malcom’s move to Zenit in 2019 following a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport
Governing body regulations allow compensation of more than £16,000 per day to be paid to clubs if a player suffers a long-term injury while on international duty.
With Gavi expected to return to competition in the coming weeks, FIFA’s final payout could reach £5.8 million, according to sources. Mundo Deportivo.
While the payout will no doubt be welcomed by Barca’s leaders, a recent court ruling will see them miss out on previously scheduled payments.
The club are said to charge £410,000 in add-ons in relation to Malcom who joined Zenit St Petersburg in 2019 for a Russian record fee.
Zenit were originally scheduled to feature every time they qualified for Europe, but a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport has ruled this is not mandatory due to UEFA’s ban on Russian teams.
