Barcelona’s failure to beat Inter Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday night could have serious financial consequences for the struggling club.

After last night’s dramatic 3-3 draw at Camp Nou, the Italian team could knock Barcelona out of the league if they beat group minnows Viktoria Plzen next week in San Siro.

Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo have reported how much Barcelona could lose financially unless they are able to win their last two games and get other results their way.

It is rumored that the club will lose £18.4 million if they fail to make it to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

As previously reported, Barcelona spent more than £132 million over the summer rebuilding Xavi’s team, but to pay for the expenses they’ve budgeted this season to get the team at least into the last eight of European competition.

However, progress now seems unlikely for Xavi’s side, who also face the task of beating a Bayern Munich side they have been battling against in recent seasons.

If Barcelona finish third in their group, they will be relegated to the Europa League.

But even if they did win that competition, it wouldn’t be enough to fill the economic hole left by an early Champions League exit, with the Europa League winners set to earn around £13 million.

As previously reported, Barcelona would earn around £8.4m if they make it to the last 16 and a further £9.3m if they make it to the quarter-finals.

From there they would get another £11million for the semi-finals and £13.6million or £17.5million depending on whether they would win the final, if they made it that far.

Barcelona fans had high hopes for a positive result against Inter Milan on Wednesday night, with the Serie A giants losing all five of their previous visits to the Nou Camp.

What followed, however, was a nerve-wracking night with Barcelona appearing to be on the brink of elimination on more than one occasion.

Barcelona took the lead through Ousmane Dembele in the first 45, then goals from Nicolo Barella and Lautaro Martinez in the second half gave the visitors the lead.

Robert Lewandowski gave the Spain side hopes of a dream comeback with a goal in the 82nd minute, but Robin Gosens scored what appeared to be the winner with just one minute plus stoppage time to play.

Summer signing Lewandowski scored an equalizer in the 92nd minute to earn a point – although it could perhaps be a delay in their departure if Inter Milan can win at San Siro next week.

The financial ramifications of Barcelona’s progress in the Champions League are well documented.
