According to reports, Barcelona are having trouble officially registering new coach Hansi Flick due to ongoing financial problems at the club.

The former Bayern Munich and German national team coach was appointed as the new Barca boss on Wednesday after the club decided to sack former dugout chief Xavi in a bizarre turn of events.

Xavi had previously announced his intention to leave his post in January before reconsidering his original decision at the club’s desperate request, but was subsequently sacked following a disagreement.

Board members then moved quickly to bring Flick to Camp Nou and the former Champions League-winning coach signed a two-year contract, but he is still not registered with LaLiga, as reported by Marca.

This is not the first time Barcelona have faced problems registering players and staff in recent seasons, caused by financial problems, with several first-team stars previously having to wait to receive a squad number.

Rather, they activated a series of economic levers, including the sale of some future broadcast and image rights in exchange for cash injections from buyers.

Barcelona initially sold 49 percent of ‘Barca Studios’ to investors when they were in their worst financial crisis two years ago and have considered taking drastic action by selling part of the club to private individuals.

They are still waiting for an £85.5 million payment from Libero, who bought the 49 percent of ‘Barca Studios’ at the time, while a similarly priced deal with kit supplier Nike is also expected to be announced.

Both payments are expected to directly help address the financial crisis holding back Flick, its backroom staff and the registration of new potential players.

President Joan Laporta has tried to bring calm to uncertain times by guaranteeing new players will be recruited, but that will require further cash injections.

Barcelona must also reduce the wage bill to come in line with LaLiga spending rules.

Former manager Xavi explained during his last game in charge that his replacement would ‘suffer’ from the financial constraints the club is trying to operate under.

‘To the new manager I tell you: you will suffer.’ He said this after Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Sevilla. ‘This is a difficult job and you have to be patient.’

He added: “I don’t think our work is appreciated enough. I took over when the team was in ninth place, finished the season in second place and won the league the following season.’
