Barbie sequel finally in early stages as writers Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach settle on an idea
A year and a half after Barbie set the box office on fire, a sequel appears to be finally appearing.
Barbie opened to a whopping $162 million in mid-July 2023, on its way to $636.2 million at the domestic box office and $1.4 billion worldwide.
Given its enormous success, a sequel seemed inevitable, although writer-director Greta Gerwig and her husband/co-writer Noah Baumbach were hesitant to move forward.
Gerwig said during Time’s Women of the Year honors in March 2024, “My North Star is: What do I love deeply? What do I really care about? What is the story behind this story? If I find the undertow, we’ll take it. If I don’t find an undercurrent, there is nothing left.’
It seems that Gerwig (41) and Baumbach (55), who tied the knot in 2023 after twelve years together, have found that ‘undercurrent’, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The sequel idea is up to Warner Bros. presented and although it is in the early stages, deal talks have started again.

Both Warner Bros. However, Gerwig and Baumbach’s representatives backtracked on the report.
‘There is no legitimacy to this reporting,” said Gerwig and Baumbach’s rep, while a WB rep said, “THR’s reporting is inaccurate.”
Even if a sequel is in the works, it could take a long time for the writers to start working on the script.
Baumbach is currently in post-production on an untitled film for Netflix, starring Gerwig, Adam Sandler, George Clooney and Laura Dern.
Gerwig himself is also in production for a new Netflix adaptation of the Chronicles of Narnia books.
There is currently no release date for Baumbach’s untitled film, nor for Gerwig’s Narnia film.
It seems likely that Baumbach could start writing the Barbie sequel after he wraps his film, although no timetable has been revealed at this time.
A source claimed that Baumbach would get the writing process started and the couple would pass the script back and forth in several passes.

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling would definitely return as Barbie and Ken, although it’s unclear who else from the supporting cast will return
Gerwig teased at a WGA West event in October 2023, “I find that when I’ve shared ideas too early, they turn out bad, and then the movie won’t be good.
“I don’t like talking about things too early, pitching things or showing treatments, because it feels like it’s going to ruin the movie somehow,” she said.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling would definitely return as Barbie and Ken, although it’s unclear who else from the supporting cast will return.
The original film’s cast also includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp, Dua Lipa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Michael Cera and more.
