Inside the Obama-Biden tension: President’s ally says he is ‘deeply resentful’ of Obama staff treatment and how he was ‘pushed aside’ for Hillary Clinton
Joe Biden’s team believes Barack Obama is secretly trying to block him from the 2024 election, according to a confidant of the president.
Although Obama has publicly expressed support for his former vice president, former presidents from his administration have been the loudest voices warning of election defeat. His friend George Clooney also publicly criticized him on Wednesday.
Biden’s ally Joe Scarborough vented his anger a day later on his TV show “Morning Joe,” exposing the simmering tensions within the Democratic Party.
“The Biden campaign and many Democratic officials believe that Barack Obama is quietly working behind the scenes to orchestrate this. And if Joe Biden believes that, it won’t get him out of the race any faster,” he said.
Scarborough went on to describe the years of resentment and how Biden felt passed over by Obama in 2016 when then-President picked Hillary Clinton as his successor.
On Thursday, Joe Scarborough (center) used his “Morning Joe” show to attack Barack Obama, saying Biden’s team believed he was orchestrating calls to oust him.
He and Biden reportedly speak often. And it was Scarborough’s show on Monday that the president chose to use for his retort, calling in by phone to rail against the “elites” who oppose him.
On Wednesday, it was Clooney, one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars and a close friend of Obama, with a column in the New York Times titled, “I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Nominee.”
One day later Politics revealed that he had contacted Obama before publishing. The former president did not warn him about the idea, sources said.
In fact, they were both at the swanky fundraiser together in Los Angeles, where Clooney said, “This is heartbreaking to say, but the Joe Biden I was at the fundraiser with three weeks ago was not the Joe “Big F***ing Deal” Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same guy we all saw at the debate.”
Clooney was a regular visitor to the Obama White House, and the former president even vacationed with him on Lake Como in Italy.
He joins a group of Obama figures calling on Biden to step aside. The most outspoken was David Axelrod, who masterminded Obama’s two presidential campaigns and warned Biden this week that he was headed for a “landslide” defeat.
Scarborough responded by saying that Biden would simply ignore the warnings of people like Axelrod and the Obama alumni who run Pod Save America, who have also demanded that Biden step aside.
“David Axelrod is going to make sure that Joe Biden digs in again,” he said.
“Every time the pod brothers say something nasty about Joe Biden, which they have done repeatedly … saying nasty things about Joe Biden before the debate and after the debate … ” he said.
Former President Barack Obama joined Biden at a flashy fundraiser in Los Angeles last month. George Clooney was also there and wrote that the president was a shadow of his former self
Clooney was a frequent visitor to the Obama White House and the two remain close. They are seen here heading to dinner from Clooney’s Lake Cuomo home
“Every time they do that, he digs himself in a little bit deeper. The path to Joe Biden stepping aside gracefully is not through the Obamas or the Clintons.”
Biden has deep feelings for the Obamas and the Clintons, Scarborough continues.
“Joe Biden is deeply outraged by the way he was treated not only by Obama’s staff, but also by the way he was pushed aside in favor of Hillary Clinton,” he said.
“He is deeply resentful of those who try to push him out of the way. He has always felt like an outsider. Always felt like people looked down on him.”
Biden has always valued his working-class roots, offering a folksy counterpoint to Obama’s Ivy League erudition when they were president.
However, there were frequent reports of insults from Obama aides, fueled by suggestions that Biden was eccentric and a relic of an outdated style of politics.
Former Obama strategist David Axelrod is one of the loudest voices warning Biden that he is in danger of losing the White House to Donald Trump.
Axelrod was the mastermind behind Barack Obama’s two election victories in 2008 and 2012
Democratic strategist Brad Bannon said it was unthinkable that someone like Axelrod would operate without Obama’s approval.
“It is very clear that the Obama wing of the Democratic Party is very concerned about Joe Biden staying in the race,” he said.
‘David Axelrod speaks for Obama because he doesn’t want to go public.’
This isn’t the first time Team Obama has voiced concerns about Biden’s campaign. Axelrod and others have often and openly worried that he has failed to build the infrastructure needed to win in 2024.
But after Biden’s disastrous performance in his first debate with Donald Trump, they gained momentum.
“There are certain immutable facts of life, and they were painfully obvious on that debate stage, and the president just can’t seem to live with them — he hasn’t faced them yet. He’s not winning this race,” Axelrod told CNN over the weekend.
Biden’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
