Bandaged Donald Trump walks into the Republican convention to ‘It’s Man’s World’ to watch his new running mate J.D. Vance make the headline speech
Former President Donald Trump made another impressive entrance on the third day of his convention, this time walking into a packed house to the tune of James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s World.”
Trump, who is known for curating playlists for his campaign rallies, showed up with a version of the funk star’s recording, accompanied by Luciano Pavoratti, another Trump favorite.
Trump raised his fist as he entered, again with a bandage over his ear, on a night when speakers called for a bold US foreign policy to intimidate opponents and avoid “perpetual wars.”
It was a night when his backers finally carried out the red meat attacks and his vice presidential pick, J.D. Vance, was ready for the biggest stage of his life.
“This is a man’s world, this is a man’s world,” Brown sings. “But it would be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl.”
After arriving, Trump returned to his front-row seat next to Senator Marco Rubio, who failed to make the cut for vice president but gave his full support to Trump, a 2016 rival.
Trump had slipped into the convention hall earlier in the day to check out the podium, lectern and an autocue. The autocue will play the speech that Trump says he repeated after the attempt on his life that left him wounded on Thursday night.
Donald Trump is back for the third day of his convention
Four days after his ear was wounded by an assassin’s bullet, he still wore a bandage on his right ear.
After a Tuesday night in which his family frequently touted his personal qualities — including a speech from daughter-in-law Lara Trump — the former president was set to return to the presidential hall to hear a series of speeches defending his candidacy.
Trump has mostly watched, laughed and listened on the convention floor. But at an earlier private event, he was included about the attempted murder.
“I’ve been shot. How can that be?” he said, as chants of “fight, fight” were heard.
“God was with me, I tell you. That’s what they call the ‘close call.’ That was an amazing thing, a terrible thing. An astonishing thing. And in many ways it changes your attitude, your outlook on life. And I think, honestly, you appreciate God even more. Something happened. It wasn’t that it was pleasant. It wasn’t that it was a complete failure. But it was pretty awful that something like that could happen.”
Vance plans to bring the economic populism that catapulted him to the Senate and endeared him to Trump to the convention crowd. On Tuesday, he sat next to Trump and chatted with the nominee amid the lineup of prime-time speakers.
Trump’s third night comes hours after the White House reported that rival President Joe Biden had tested positive for COVID-19, following another week of poor polling and on a day when a prominent Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), called on him to step back from the campaign.
Trump had a lot to look forward to on television, as convention speakers once again showered him with praise while also occasionally launching fierce attacks.

“President Biden is weak in more ways than one,” said former Trump ambassador to Germany Ric Grenell, contrasting that with Trump’s “incredible courage and resilience.”
“You are voting for the strength and grace that will bring peace and prosperity back to you, your family, America, and the world,” he promised.
Trump loyalist Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) took aim at Biden with a series of one-liners.
“We saw more people in the Witness Protection Programs than the unscripted Biden,” he said, trying to link inflation to convicted Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez. “You have to use gold bars so the bribes hold their value,” he joked.
And former Trump economic adviser Peter Navarro lashed out at Judge Juan Merchan, who presided over the trial of Stormy Daniels, just hours after Navarro was released from federal prison after serving four months for ignoring a congressional subpoena in the House of Representatives investigation on Jan. 6.
