Kasih Ibu Hospital Group’s flagship hospital in Denpasar, the capital of Bali, Indonesia, has been validated for Phase 6 of the HIMSS Model for adoption of electronic health records.
The eight-stage model measures an organization’s maturity in EMR capabilities.
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT
Kasih Ibu Hospital Group started as a maternity hospital in Denpasar before becoming a general hospital four years after its founding in 1987. Now with four branches across Bali’s regencies, the group saw a growing need for digital transformation as it was based in one of the world’s most visited island destinations – around 5 million foreign tourists visited Bali last year.
The digital transformation at the 100-bed flagship hospital began with the installation of a business intelligence platform to enable data-driven decision-making within the organization and identify specific needs and areas for improvement. This was followed by the implementation of PACS, LIS and then the EMR system, powered by Vesalius.
According to HIMSS, the visionary leadership led to the implementation of the EMR in 2018. Kasih Ibu Hospital Denpasar recently underwent EMRAM validation to test the foundational technology, the EMR, against international standards.
During the validation, HIMSS validators noted the hospital’s automated Early Warning Scoring (EWS) system with real-time alerts, a supporting technology for the EMR system in the general wards. Kasih Ibu Hospital Denpasar was the first in Indonesia to apply this system, made possible by Philips. It was observed that the EWS can automatically record vital signs data in the EHR within five minutes and immediately detect the patient’s deterioration.
Meanwhile, Kasih Ibu Hospital Denpasar has also integrated CDSS with globally recognized clinical resources, rolled out closed management systems and fully integrated the EHR across all departments. It also introduced a patient portal called KIH Connect to improve patient engagement.
“Continuous monitoring and improvement were an integral part of our process. We regularly monitored the performance of deployed systems using Tableau for data analytics, ensuring effectiveness and efficiency. This approach helped identify areas for continuous improvement and maintaining compliance with the Stage 6 standards,” Kasih Ibu Hospital Group Chairman Krishna Duarsa explained Healthcare IT news.
“Together, our team ensured that all aspects of our digital systems, processes and integrations were thoroughly documented. This included detailed data from system implementations, staff training programs, data integration mechanisms, patient safety protocols and continuous improvement initiatives.”
Following the EMRAM validation, Kasih Ibu Hospital Group says it will continue to invest in the digital transformation of its hospitals. It also aims to get its hospital in Denpasar validated for the highest EMRAM stage, with HIMSS expecting integration with SatuSehat for data exchange, among other things.
THE BIG TREND
In 2022, based in Jakarta Pondok Indah Hospital Group became the first healthcare provider in Indonesia to be validated for the HIMSS EMRAM. All three hospitals in Pondok Indah, Puri Indah and Bintaro Jaya were validated for phase 6.
Meanwhile, all 43 public hospitals are covered this year The Hong Kong Hospital Authority and the private Princ Hospital Suvarnabhumi in Thailand have been validated for Phase 7 of the EMRAM. Taiwan-based Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and South Korea’s Seoul National University Bundang Hospital were revalidated for the highest EMRAM stage this year.
ON THE RECORD
“With the gradual advancement of digital transformation in healthcare across the country, our achievement of EMRAM Stage 6, previously achieved by only one other hospital, is a testament to our advanced capabilities in healthcare technology. This success shows that digital transformation is not limited to the capital Jakarta, but is also flourishing in the regions beyond,” said Duarsa. The hospital has set up an international department that focuses on international tourists and expats.
“As a hospital group based in Bali, the tourist hub of Indonesia, our strategic location requires us to meet the high standards of international insurance companies, ensuring that our facilities are top class and meet global benchmarks. Phase 6 HIMSS EMRAM- achieving validation not only builds trust between the international and local communities, but also underlines our commitment to providing high-quality care. This recognition strengthens our position as a leading healthcare provider in the region,” he added.
In addition to helping improve patient safety, operational efficiency and reputation, a HIMSS EMRAM validation also positions an organization to adopt new health technologies, according to Duarsa.
“This readiness for future technologies ensures the hospital remains at the forefront of medical advancements and continues to provide cutting-edge care to its patients.”
