Aussie bloke’s medical bills pile up after travel insurance mistake before scooter accident in Bali

An Australian trader is being evacuated from Bali today after a scooter accident left him in a coma and left him with huge medical bills because he had not taken out travel insurance.

Shane Ramsey, 30, was visiting Bali for a close friend’s wedding and was riding a moped in Seminyak on Sunday when he crashed into a roadside pole.

The 30-year-old was rushed to hospital, where he underwent brain surgery and has been in a coma ever since.

He was not wearing a helmet and had no travel insurance, which would have cost him only about $50 a week.

His family has already paid $70,000 to have him undergo emergency neurosurgery, while hospital bills are running at $9,000 a day.

Mr Ramsey will leave hospital in Kuta on Thursday to take a medical evacuation flight home to Perth, costing around $150,000.

He and his family leave the Indonesian island around 11:30am and land in Western Australia shortly before 5pm.

An ambulance will meet them on the platform and Mr Ramsay will be taken to the intensive care unit at Perth Royal Hospital.

His mother, Catherine Ramsey, flew from Perth to the plane immediately after the crash to be with her son.

She told Daily Mail Australia that Ramsey suffered three bleeds on the brain, which required surgery, and a fractured skull.

“He is stable at this time, but the true extent of the damage to his brain is unknown at this time,” she said.

‘He is still in a coma and we will only know the outcome in a few days.

‘I just know that the damage is enormous and we don’t know if he will come out of the coma or if he will have lasting problems.

“We’re holding on, we just feel numb right now.”

Mr. Ramsey was on his way to watch a UFC fight with friends when the accident happened.

His mother previously told Nine News she would sell the house to pay his medical bills if necessary.

“I just want to take him home, we’re in a strange country,” she said.

Doctors are not yet sure how extensive the damage to his brain is.

Mr. Ramsey had plans to buy a house when he returned home.

A GoFundMe was launched on Monday to help pay for Mr Ramsey’s medical bills and possible medical evacuation home.

At the time of publication, over $105,000 has been raised.

Mr. Ramsey had just completed a three-year apprenticeship and was looking to the future.

The carpenter’s former boss also took to Facebook on Monday to draw attention to the fundraiser.

He remembers running into his former student a few weeks ago.

“You forget how f***ing fragile life can be (and) how quickly everything can change,” he wrote.
