Amelia Tyler, the voice behind it Baldur's Gate 3's narrator, revealed her favorite line from her favorite subplot in Larian Studios' critically acclaimed role-playing game (RPG).
Minor spoilers ahead Baldur's Gate 3.
If you choose the Dark Urge background, you get additional voice lines from Tyler's narrator, which emphasize your character's inner drive to kill.
“My favorite line (from) the Dark Urge is just laughing,” Tyler said recently in an interview with Ny Breaking Gaming.
“It's just a soft chuckle, I think it's after Alfira,” she said, referring to a scene early in the Dark Urge playthrough in which the charming Bard Alfira attempts to join your party. Later that night, your character gives in to their murderous urges and ends the poor Tiefling's life.
“If you roll the right things (in the game's dice-throwing dialogue trees), you just get an amused chuckle at what happened.”
Tyler then discussed the challenges surrounding the scene, especially when it came to creating the right kind of sound for the Dark Urge. “When you see laughter pop up most of the time in scripts (…) your heart sinks a little because a laugh can so easily be wrong. It's so easy to make it sound like it's fake,” she said.
“And this wasn't even a normal kind of laugh, this was just enjoying it, relaxing into what it was (sic.). I love that people noticed it and I got to play like that. It's so rare to get a character who can you just sink your teeth into it, pun intended.”
I remember coming across this scene in my own Halloween Dark Urge playthrough and finding the scene equally darkly compelling, thanks in no small part to Tyler's nuanced performance. Baldur's Gate 3 may be full of playful moments, but the presence of this dark side of the game also contributes greatly to the enrichment of Larian's fantasy story, making it one of the best RPGs of recent years.
