The owner of the popular beach club on the Spanish island was later arrested for manslaughter after police discovered the illegal, ‘overloaded’ building.

The structural transformations of the beach club were said to have been noticed by municipal engineers who saw the building undergo a series of changes. In 2017, a technical building inspection ruled that the area of the property was already classified as unsuitable for expansion works.

At the site of the terrible collapse last month, several customers were said to have been dancing in the chill-out zone when the terrace suddenly collapsed at their feet.

Debris fell to the ground floor, then spread to the basement and within seconds panic broke out.

Surviving customers screamed for help and witnesses to the devastation began calling emergency services.

“Within one minute we received dozens of calls,” a police spokesman said last month.

When the first patrols arrived on the scene, they saw debris piled up on the ground floor of the two-story building.

The screams of survivors and prisoners echoed through the streets.

“It was a terrible thing,” said one firefighter.

Cartago Street was temporarily closed to allow emergency services to evacuate the location and carry out their rescue mission undisturbed.
