A baker has revealed the ‘traumatizing’ mistake she made while making a gender reveal cake that left the mother-to-be in tears.

Abbie Caswell, 27, owns Batter Confectionery in Hammond, Louisiana. The pastry chef regularly markets her small business via TikTok, but she recently shared how she “ruined” a couple’s special moment.

In a viral video, which has more than 1.9 million views to date, she recounted the moment when the mother came to pick up the cake and burst into tears.

Abi explained that the employee who took the order did not know that the sweet treat was a gender reveal cake, so she accidentally painted the outside of the cake blue instead of the inside.

The clip started with Abi showing what she is doing in her bakery one day.

She showed that she was making some birthday cakes and cookies. The baker said that the day went well, but then it took a ‘drastic turn’.

“This cake was a blue cake that read, ‘Coming February 2024.’ Reading this order form, I think this is for someone with a baby on the way.

“Apparently the girl who took this order didn’t realize this was a gender reveal cake and the blue should only be on the inside,” she explained, scraping off the blue icing on top of the cake.

And things took an even bigger turn when the mom-to-be picked up the cake.

“So we 100 percent ruined the gender reveal for her,” Abi said.

The baker commented that this was “by far the biggest mistake” they had made.

Abi and her staff apologized and offered to make the child’s birthday cake for free.

Speaking to Insider, the baker explained that the confusion arose when a friend of the mom’s called and asked for a gender reveal cake, but didn’t specifically ask if the icing was on the inside.

The employee who took the order assumed it would be a gender reveal party, but not that the cake would reveal the gender.

She said the mother was shocked. She wasn’t angry, but did ask if they could fix the cake so it could still be a surprise for her husband.
