Baffled Americans mock Katy Perry as they call AFL Grand Final she’s set to headline a ‘made up event’: ‘A step away from opening car dealerships’
Katy Perry faced more criticism after she was announced as the headliner for the 2024 AFL Grand Final in September.
This time around, the pop star was ridiculed by bewildered American fans who claimed the performance was a ‘retrograde step’ for the 39-year-old, with some even calling the Grand Final a ‘fabricated event’.
The barrage of responses came after Pop Crave sent the announcement to X on Thursday, along with a promotional photo of Katy holding an AFL ball.
‘Katy Perry will headline Telstra Pre-Game Entertainment at the 2024 Toyota AFL Grand Final on September 28.’
However, American fans were quick to admit they were bewildered by the announcement, with one fan saying, “Katy = unknown, made-up event,” and pointing out that her pop rival Lady Gaga will most likely perform at the Paris Olympics.
Another shared a gif of Seinfeld’s George Costanza squinting with the caption, “What is this obscure sporting event?”
One commentator slammed Katy’s lackluster performances of her recent singles, such as Woman’s World: “She’ll sing all her pre-2018 songs because the general public doesn’t know about the recent songs.”
While the AFL Grand Final is one of the most popular events on the Australian sporting calendar, one follower suggested the booking was a sign of things going downhill for the singer.
Katy Perry has been ridiculed again, this time by bewildered American fans who claimed her upcoming appearance in the AFL Grand Final was a ‘step back’ for the 39-year-old. Some even branded the Grand Final a ‘fabricated event’.
“This is just one step away from opening car dealerships,” they wrote.
Australian Rules Footy fans also took to social media en masse on Thursday to criticise the AFL after it announced Perry would be performing.
News that the Roar star would travel to Australia for September’s match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was met with disapproval from fans, with many questioning why the AFL felt the need to import talent from overseas.
American fans expressed their surprise at the announcement, with one saying: ‘Katy = unknown, made up event.’

“AFL Grand Final should be about giving Australian bands some exposure. Let @birdsoftokyo do it again, they were amazing when they did it,” one fan commented on X.
Another weighed in with a similar sentiment, arguing that the foreign artists recruited for the grand finale were often past their sell-by date.
“The AFL continues to hire overseas artists even ten or twenty years after they became popular,” wrote one commentator, while another noted that “this would have been a huge success ten years ago.”

Katy confirmed the news in a statement on Thursday, saying how happy she is to be back in Australia.
‘I am so excited to be back in Australia and performing at the amazing MCG in front of 100,000 of the best and loudest fans in the world at this year’s Toyota AFL Grand Final.
“See you in September, Oi, Oi, Oi!” she said.
The announcement comes after DailyMail.com revealed that Katy is ‘pointing fingers at everyone but herself’ after her comeback single Woman’s World failed to chart.
According to insiders, she is desperately looking for a new plan to save her musical comeback.
The singer released the lead single from her seventh studio album, 143, last Thursday, but the song — billed as a powerful feminist anthem — was quickly dismissed as unoriginal, hypocritical and predictable.
