Baby Reindeer’s Jessica Gunning doubles down on creator Richard Gadd’s plea for fans of the show to stop trying to find the real ‘Martha’

Jessica Gunning has doubled down on Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd’s plea to fans to stop trying to find out who the real ‘Martha Scott’ is.

The 38-year-old actress blew fans away with her role as stalker Martha in the Netflix series, which is based on writer and lead actor Richard’s own experience of being stalked.

After the gripping show enjoyed global success, Richard, 34, was forced to plead with sleuths on social media to stop trying to discover the characters’ real identities.

Now Jessica has doubled down on his plea, saying it’s a ‘really shame’ that fans are becoming fixated on who the real ‘Martha’ is after Richard went to great lengths to protect their identities.

She said Glamour: ‘I would like to call on people not to do that […] I think it’s a shame because it shows that they didn’t watch the show properly, that’s not the point in any way.

‘Netflix and Richard [Gadd] went out of his way to ensure that the identities remained private for a reason.

“I think they should try to watch the show again, and really see what the point of it was – it certainly wasn’t, I consciously didn’t want to do an impersonation of anyone, I wanted to do an interpretation of this character.”

Richard has made it clear that he has changed the names and specific details of the story to protect the identities of those involved.

He recently asked people to stop trying to find out the real identities of his characters as it has led to false accusations against his friends.

In an Instagram statement, he detailed how “people I love, have worked with and admire” were unfairly attacked.

‘Please don’t speculate about who real people might be. That’s not the point of the show,” he added.

Baby Reindeer delves into Richard’s harrowing stalking ordeal and brutal sexual abuse as he plays a fictionalized version of himself named Donny Dunn.

Donny is flooded with 41,071 emails, 744 tweets, 350 voicemails and 106 pages of letters from stalker Martha.

The series also chronicles Donny’s horrific rape by his comedic mentor Darrien, played by Tom Goodman-Hill.

Darrien convinces Donny to come to his apartment and get high on drugs, promising him that TV producers are interested in his work. But while on drugs, he sexually assaults Donny several times.

Richard has opened up about what it was like to re-enact his trauma for the small screen – and how he hopes it will aid his healing process.

Reliving his “serious” 20s, he told Attitude: “It’s a huge challenge, but I’m hoping for catharsis when the show comes out.”
