A nine-month-old baby who suffered life-threatening burns after being pelted with hot coffee has been discharged from hospital today.
Little Luka was picnicking with his mother at Hanlon Park, in Brisbane’s south-east, when they were approached by a stranger around midday on August 27. He poured a thermos of hot coffee over the baby before fleeing the scene.
The baby suffered life-threatening burns to his face, upper body and arms and underwent five operations at Queensland Children’s Hospital.
His neck and chest will likely show scars.
Baby Luka’s mother announced on Wednesday that her baby would be leaving the hospital.
He was expected to be released from hospital earlier, but after his fourth operation he suffered from gastrointestinal complaints.
She said the family did not visit Hanlon Park regularly and decided to visit the place so they could play with other friends.
“I normally don’t go to the south side,” she told KIIS 97.3.
‘We were catching up with the friends from my ‘mom group’.’

The mother said she was approached from behind by a stranger as the hot coffee was thrown at her baby.
“I was only in the park for five minutes, maybe longer, and I was taking pictures of my son playing, and he came up behind me, threw some liquid on him and ran away,” she said.
“I didn’t realize what it was at the time, but then Luka started screaming and I saw his skin peeling off. I knew it was hot liquid.”
The foreigner then quickly fled the scene of the crime, evaded police and left for abroad.
“My girlfriend left her baby and me and ran after this guy, but she tripped and fell and he was very, very fast,” the baby’s mother said.
“… He knew exactly what he was doing, and he picked the right moment.”
