The post, which was shared earlier this month, was uploaded in the special baby names thread titled: ‘Garri for a girl?’
It read: ‘My late father’s name was Gary. I would like to honor him by naming our dear daughter Garri, or do you think it would be better spelled Gari?
‘Middle name will be Anne.’
The expectant mother did not elaborate, but thanked readers in advance for their help.
But most weren’t fans of the idea and didn’t hesitate to make it known.
One wrote: ‘At a time when no one calls their sons Gary anymore, you want to give it to a girl?!’
Another added, “There are ways to honor a loved one without saddling your daughter with a name she will hate.” She will also be bullied. Could you use your father’s or mother’s name, or a surname as a middle name?’
Someone else wrote: ‘Maybe there are some other names on your father’s side that you could use, instead of imposing a male name on a girl for life, or at least until she changes her name through a deed of investigation…’
Readers were quick to share their thoughts, with very mixed results, before the woman then responded to the fury
And a fourth simply said: ‘I don’t like it for a girl.’
However, on the other hand, there were those who were not against the unique name.
One person commented: ‘Actually I like it. Garri is best spelled because Gari rhymes with hairy.’
Another said: ‘Although it’s not a name I would choose for a boy or especially a girl, I do like it. There’s something sharp about it.’
Following the widespread fury, the mum added further context to the comments as she wrote: ‘If Terri and Toni are acceptable, why not Garri? I also know a girl called Harry.
‘I think it’s super cute for a girl. I like Garri-Anne’s suggestion. Thank you!’
This isn’t the first time the internet has been embroiled in a baby naming controversy.
In recent weeks, pregnant influencer Jaci Marie Smith, who lives in California, caused a stir after sharing the eight names she had been considering for her child.
The list included Dove, Zo and Charm, but viewers remained bitterly divided over the suggestions.
