Baby boy is critically ill in hospital ‘after mother’s boyfriend gave infant a bear hug’

A nine-month-old baby in Missouri is fighting for his life in the hospital after his mother’s boyfriend dropped him to the floor and cuddled the child in his arms until he stopped crying.

Baby Waylon was hospitalized with a brain bleed and bruising on his head after the Newton County Sherriff’s Office said he was aspirating and not breathing while he slept.

Investigators say this was the result of child abuse by Jordan Boggess, 28, who is in a relationship with Waylon’s mother.

Medical personnel from Children’s Mercy told Newton County detectives that the child had “abusive head trauma” and other injuries.

The baby’s cousin, Jaden Branham, said: ‘It’s very heartbreaking to walk in and see a child literally fighting for his life.’

She added, “These are children, and they deserve to live normal, carefree lives, without having to fear who they are.” And unfortunately he wasn’t. He couldn’t do that.’

Waylon was placed on a ventilator upon arrival and has since suffered brain swelling and multiple seizures while in critical condition at Children’s Hospital of Kansas City.

On September 14, the child was placed in a baby sweater while his mother went to the toilet.

He was then thrown into the air by Boggess, who failed to catch the child on the second throw due to claims of ‘sweaty hands’ and Waylon fell to the ground.

That’s when Boggess admitted to authorities that he bear hugged the child until he stopped crying.

Christa Newman, the baby’s grandmother, said WBTV: ‘They said baby Waylon won’t be the same baby. If he makes it, he will be wheelchair bound. He won’t be able to talk. He won’t be able to feed himself.’

Waylon's mother, Bessie McCamish, says she has since left the man accused of abusing her child and had 'no knowledge of the abuse'

Cousin Jaden Branham said, “These are kids, and they deserve to live normal, carefree lives, without having to fear who they are.”

Branham told it KY3: “As a mother, if my child vomits, I’m not going to pick him up and throw him in the air thinking that will help in every scenario.”

‘It’s difficult. I’m out of words. As parents, it is our job to protect and be there for children. This is the hardest fight I’ve ever had to fight,” said the child’s grandfather, Tyler Burbridge.

The family was told that the baby had no brain activity during the first few days in the hospital. Waylon has since started showing improvements by opening his eyes and pulling his arm.

Branham said, “Every time you walk into his room, it’s just machine after machine. There are IV pumps everywhere. There’s always a nurse in the room.’

The child’s family, including his father, have stayed with him throughout his care and have set up a fundraising campaign GoFundMe.com to help his father gain sole custody of Waylon.

Online discourse has accused Waylon’s mother, Bessie McCamish, of knowledge of the abuse.

She responded and said, “I too had no knowledge of the abuse! And he is no longer my current boyfriend. Anyone who knows me knows I wouldn’t let anyone hurt that child! You don’t even know his name, or mine.”

Another fundraising campaign in progress GoFundMe.com is to support Waylon’s mother.

Boggess is now under investigation for child abuse.
