Barcelona’s ears will be pricked up after AZ Alkmaar Under 19 star Mexx Meerdink outlined his ambitions to play for the Catalan giants in the future.

The Dutch youngster shone as his side lifted the UEFA Youth League trophy on Monday night with a thumping 5-0 win over Hadjuk Split U19.

Meerdink scored twice and assisted another in a dazzling first half performance, with his boss agreeing to take him out after the break, that’s how comfortable the Eredivisie side were level.

The showpiece brace took the 19-year-old’s tally for the tournament to nine goals from just six games, as well as two assists, with the striker also captaining his side against Frankfurt earlier in the competition.

Throughout the game, Barcelona have been known as one of the best sides for developing young players, and Meerdink is clearly eager to become the latest in a long line of young talent.

In the latter match, the 19-year-old showed a temperament and maturity that was perhaps beyond his years, scoring the last penalty in his side’s last eight penalties against Anderlecht, sealing victory over the Belgian club.

Sport reports that he is a player on the radar of Xavi’s side, although he is not the only one in a squad to achieve UEFA Youth League success.

Alkmaar U19 forwards Jayden Adda and Ernest Poku are also said to have piqued the interest of several clubs and are poised for a bright future in the game.
