Awkwafina says she wants to ‘get back together’ with her Crazy Rich Asians castmates in a sequel

Awkwafina spoke about her performance in a sequel to the 2018 romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians during an appearance on Monday’s episode of Good morning America.

The 34-year-old artist spent much of her time on the program discussing her voice role as Scuttle in the upcoming musical film The Little Mermaid.

At the end of her interview, the actress, who recently began working on a film with John Cena, was then asked if she would reprise her role as Goh Peik Lin in a sequel to the hugely successful film.

When Awkwafina was told she was supposed to be “in” the project, she replied, “That’s what I told them… I was like, ‘Where is it?'”

The artist, born Nora Lum, said at the time that she wasn’t aware of any firm plans for the feature film or its possible release date, saying, “When? I have no idea. I think it’s going to get kicked out.”

However, the actress stated that she would jump at the chance to reconnect with her former costars.

“It would make so much sense. They are like my family right now. It was so long ago. We would all like to get back together,” she said.

Crazy Rich Asians is based on Kevin Kwan’s novel of the same name, originally published in 2013.

The film was about a Chinese American woman who traveled to Singapore to be introduced to her boyfriend’s family, only to discover that they are among the wealthiest individuals in the country.

In addition to Awkwafina, the film’s cast included Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Michelle Yeoh.

Crazy Rich Asians was a hit with both critics and audiences upon release, grossing nearly $240 million worldwide, according to Box office Mojo.

Development of a feature film sequel began not long after its release, and Kwan’s novel China Rich Girlfriend, which serves as a sequel to Crazy Rich Asians, is said to have been the source material for the project.

It was later revealed that a third feature film sequel based on the third novel in the series, Rich People Problems, would be shot back-to-back with its predecessor, per deadline.

Screenwriter Adele Lim, who co-wrote the Crazy Rich Asians script with Peter Chiarelli, left the sequel’s team in 2019 following a dispute over her payment for the project.

The pair would later be replaced by Amy Wang, according to deadline.

The sequel to Crazy Rich Asians currently has no scheduled premiere date.

A spin-off centered around the characters played by Gemma Chan and Harry Shum Jr. is also currently in progress.
