Avatar: The Way of Water number one at the box office and becomes the eleventh highest grossing national film

The sequels topped the box office over the weekend of January 27-29, but there were a few surprise debuts, including an international thriller, a Christian-themed apocalyptic drama and a concert film featuring a Grammy-winning superstar.

Avatar: The Way of Water has topped the box office for the seventh week in a row. The fantasy adventure set in the world of Pandora recently garnered four Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture before its $15.7 million win over the weekend.

The James Cameron-directed sequel has surpassed Star Wars: The Last Jedi to become the 11th highest domestic grossing film of all time, according to Deadline.

Avatar 2 is also a striking distance from the 10th movie The Avengers, which is expected to drop mid-week.

Seven weeks: Avatar: The Way of Water has been number one at the box office for seven weeks in a row. The action adventure earned $15.7 million and is now the 11th highest-grossing film domestically.

In second place was the animated sequel Puss in Boots: The Last Wish with the voices of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek. The story of the intrepid feline searching for his last wish earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature and grossed $10.6 million in ticket sales.

Tom Hanks and his grumpy rendition of A Man Called Otto came in third. The dramatic comedy about a lonely widower who has given up on life until he befriends his new immigrant neighbors grossed more than $6.7 million.

M3GAN had a terribly good weekend. The scary movie about a lifelike doll that takes on a life of its own scared $6.4 million and fourth place.

Pathaan debuted in fifth place, a thriller about an Indian spy who works to prevent a mercenary attack on his homeland. Shah Rukh Khan, known as ‘The King of Bollywood’, headlined the thriller, which grossed $5.9 million in ticket sales in its first weekend in theaters.

The horror film Infinity Pool debuted in eighth place. The sci-fi mystery about a vacation gone wrong, starring Mia Goth and Alexander Skarsgard, received a new 88 percent rating from critics at rotten tomatoes, could not overcome the polarizing word of mouth from the preliminary hearings. The film grossed just over $2.7 million.

The film starring Neal McDonough as a charming man who becomes head of the United Nations, grossed nearly $2.4 million in its first and only weekend in theaters. Former Hercules star Kevin Sorbo starred in and directed the apocalyptic thriller.

The Wandering Earth II landed in tenth place. The futuristic adventure centers on scientific efforts to save the world from destruction after the sun rises. Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau plays one of those scientists working to save humanity before it’s too late.

The concert film, Billie Eilish: Live At The O2 debuted in eleventh place, earning $1.29 million. The film gives fans a front row seat to her London show, where she performed hits. The film, which originally streamed live on Apple Music, has been nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Musical Film.
