WRANGELL, Ala. — Authorities in southeastern Alaska responded Tuesday to a landslide that spread debris along a highway.

In a social media post, the city and Borough of Wrangell said local search and rescue efforts were underway to sift through rubble near the community of about 2,000 people, about 150 miles (249 kilometers) south of Juneau.

Local crews worked with authorities including the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Coast Guard, Alaska State Police and Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. The message did not indicate whether anyone was missing or trapped.

According to the report, a large-scale search and rescue mission was not feasible because the location was unstable and dangerous. A state geologist would first have to assess the site to make sure conditions were safe before proceeding, he said.
