Turkey secured a 2-1 victory over Austria on Tuesday night and earned a draw against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, thanks to a sensational goal from Merih Demiral.
It took just 57 seconds for Turkey to take the lead, with Demiral firing a left footed shot into the roof of the net, while Austria quickly turned an in-swinging corner from Arder Güler into the penalty area.
It was the fastest goal ever scored in the knockout stages of the European Championship.
Turkey went into halftime with a 1-0 lead, but a hectic second half followed as it started to rain in the Red Bull Arena.
Demiral doubled his team’s lead in the 59th minute, again from a corner, leaping high above the Austrian defence to head in a ball from Guler.

The victory means Turkey will face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

But the two-goal lead would not last long. Seven minutes later, Michael Gregoritsch pulled one back for Ralf Rangnick’s side, tapping in a header from Stefan Posch from a set-piece.
A great save from Mert Gunok prevented Austria from equalising in the final minute, as the keeper deflected the ball wide of his goal line.
