Australia’s worst ever driver racks up 1,606 demerit points in just four months – enough to lose his licence 123 times – and $114,000 in fines

A French national who racked up a whopping 1,606 demerit points in four months has fled Australia and may never be held accountable for his dangerous behavior.

The man suspected of using fake French documents to obtain a provisional NSW driver’s license racked up so many demerit points it was enough to lose his license 123 times.

He was also fined $114,485, but not a cent of that has been paid yet, and won’t be, as there’s a good chance he won’t return to Australia.

The 355 offenses he committed in a four-month period between December 2023 and April 2024 amounted to an average of more than three per day.

Incredibly, the driver was stopped by NSW Police after eleven fines were issued. However, an individual’s traffic record is not updated in real time on the police system.

The Demerit Point Integrity Taskforce has pledged to crack down on such crime and Transport for NSW (TfNSW) is working with the French Consulate to try to tackle fraud, the Daily Telegraph reported.

In a similar case, another Frenchman racked up 553 penalty points before fleeing Australia when authorities and the police computer system eventually caught up with him.

It is not just migrants who are flouting the system.

A man from Ultimo in inner-city Sydney who collected enough demerit points in one day last June to lose his driver’s license almost eleven times.

He was caught 15 times for speeding, running red lights twice and using his phone unlawfully, which earned him 141 penalty points because it was a holiday weekend and there were double demerits.

In a three-month period he committed 123 traffic violations, which amounted to 580 penalty points.

His license has since been revoked.

NSW Roads Minister John Graham said some foreigners are getting away with their driving offenses by leaving the country before the law catches up with them.

“Achieving more than 1,600 penalty points is reckless beyond belief,” Graham told the Daily Telegraph.

‘The scale of the violations – and the threat they pose to road safety – is downright shocking.

‘I want to reassure the 6.9 million license holders in NSW that the system will remain fair and easy to use.

“But we will no longer be abused by a small subset of fly-in-fly-out rule breakers.”
