  • ‘Australia’s slowest police chase’ captured on the M1 motorway
  • Ten police cars and a helicopter are seen chasing a Mercedes
  • Three men were arrested after spikes were deployed on the highway

In what could be one of the slowest police chases of all time, more than 10 police cars and a helicopter are seen chasing an SUV at a snail’s pace down a major highway.

Chase footage shows marked and unmarked police cars following a Mercedes SUV with a person hanging from the sunroof along the M1 motorway in the Tweed region of northern New South Wales on Thursday.

The car was tracked for more than 100 km from a location in east Brisbane through the Gold Coast to the New South Wales/Queensland border and on to New South Wales.

The manhunt lasted around two hours, with the group of 16, 17 and 27-year-olds allegedly live-streaming the entire ordeal on Facebook.

A bizarre chase unfolded on the M1 motorway near the Tweed region, with police chasing a stolen Mercedes SUV that had a person on the roof.

A man is seen hanging from the sunroof of the car while another is on the hood.

The three men inside the Mercedes filmed their antics and taunted the police vehicles that were following them.

Officers managed to stop the vehicle after deploying spikes in the road, and the driver stopped near Cudgera Creek.

The footage shared on social media was dubbed “Australia’s slowest car chase”, with social media users suggesting police kept their distance as it appeared one “appeared to have a large firearm”.

The manhunt began after police were called to an address in Shore Street, Cleveland, Queensland, shortly before 9:30am on Thursday, in response to an alleged home invasion.

Graeme Carmichael was home at the time and told 7News that he called his mother to tell her that “someone was breaking into the house.”

He said that the robbers were armed and saw a machete.

When Queensland police arrived, two men fled in a Mercedes SUV and one of the slowest police chases ensued with the suspects heading for the New South Wales border.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said at around 12:20 p.m.

“Spikes were deployed in the Cudgen Road tunnel, near Tweed Valley Way, and the vehicle came to a stop on the M1 motorway at Cudgera Creek,” the police spokesman said.

Officers managed to stop the vehicle after deploying spikes in the road, and the driver stopped near Cudgera Creek. A NSW Police spokesman said three Queensland men, aged 16, 17 and 27, were arrested shortly after 1 p.m.
