Australian traveler says staying in hostels makes her ‘ageist’ towards middle-aged women: ‘They snore and are so rude’
An Australian traveling through Europe says staying in hostels makes her “ageist” to older women who “snore” and have “no respect” for other people.
Lucy Holz says the choice of cheap shared accommodation ‘affects’ her view of middle-aged women.
In a long TikTok videoshe claims that “older women” are the “worst” when it comes to sleeping in a shared space.
The young traveler booked female-only hostels not only for safety reasons, but also because women don’t snore at night.
However, she’s learned that’s not the case for older women who have kept her up all night by snoring, making noises, and even blow-drying their hair at midnight.
Aussie traveler Lucy Holz is currently backpacking around Europe and chose to stay in female-only hostels. However, she claims that this decision makes her “ageist” to middle-aged women who “snore” at night and are “disrespectful” to others in the dorm
‘While women generally don’t snore that much, I’ll tell you who does, old women. It’s gotten to the point where I see an older woman walk into my dorm room and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, why are you here?'” she said in a TikTok video
“I hate to say this, but I will. Staying in hostels makes me age,” she began.
‘I’ve been staying in a lot of hostels lately and I’ve specifically selected female hostels, which are more expensive (and they shouldn’t be).
“Other girls told me that you should always choose the women’s hostel, not only for safety, but also for snoring, because women don’t snore as much as men.”
Lucy added that she “doesn’t fall asleep that easily” and earplugs “don’t work,” so snoring has “a real effect” on her sleep cycle.
“While women generally don’t snore that much, I’ll tell you who does, old women,” she continued.
“It’s gotten to the point where I see an older woman walk into my dorm room and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, why are you here?'”
Lucy complained that older women not only snore, but are “so disrespectful” to other people in the dorm.
On her last night of stay in a “horrific hostel,” she claims a middle-aged woman took a shower at midnight and then blow-dried her hair, waking everyone up. Lucy claims the woman kept making noise as she climbed into the middle of the three-bed bunk
‘I’m just not made for hostel life. It affects my view of middle-aged women. I won’t be the same person when I come back from this vacation,” she said

Lucy claims the woman kept making noise as she climbed into the middle of the three-bed bunk.
‘Like, girl! You’re in a shared space!’ she said.
“Anyway, my towel was hanging up on one side, not in the way of anything.. she takes it off, throws it on my bed, like… great.”
“And of course, as I suspected, she fucking snores. I just wasn’t built for hostel life. It affects my view of middle-aged women.
“I won’t be the same person when I come back from this vacation.”
Within 24 hours, the video had been viewed more than 176,000 times and others agreed that older women are often inconsiderate in hostels.
“I had an elderly lady in a hostel wake up at 6am, turn on the light and do a full workout routine while I was in London,” one wrote.
“And no phone etiquette, they always watch videos and TikToks (at) full volume,” said a second.
‘Literal! just left a hostel in Switzerland and an elderly lady was screaming every day late at night and early morning during phone calls,” someone else wrote.
Another joined the conversation and said, “An elderly woman took someone’s bed at 10pm when they were out because she wanted that bed more. Moved all the person’s stuff and stuff.”
One person said a middle-aged woman kept turning off the air conditioner at night while staying in the humid Australian rainforests.
Another said, “I was staying in a hostel in Madrid and an elderly lady turned on the lights at midnight, put on TikTok at about 1am and also snored like crazy!”
One person encouraged Lucy to speak out in the future.
“I think you need to be assertive and tell them when they’re doing things that are inconsiderate…because God knows they’ll tell you the opposite,” she said.
