Australian pop star Delta Goodrem reveals how she got her unique name: ‘It’s really bizarre’

Australian pop star Delta Goodrem has finally revealed the origins of her unique first name.

Appears on ABC’s The Meetingthe former Voice star said she got her nickname from rock icon Joe Cocker.

The admission came after a spectator pressed the Born To Try star’s name next to her.

“Were you named after the Greek letter, or the mouth of the river, or the airline or the electric company?” they asked.

Delta was clearly pleased with the questions and responded enthusiastically, “I love you, that’s a good question.”

Delta then explained that her name comes from the classic song Delta Lady by Joe Cocker, which appeared on his eponymous second album in 1969.

She added that the name was an odd choice for parents Lea and Denis, as neither of them were particularly musical.

“Actually, it’s after a song, and my parents’ songs aren’t musical. Let me make that clear,” Delta explained.

‘But Joe Cocker was their favourite artist and he sang, “Oh you’re mine, yes you’re mine Delta Lady.”

Delta added that her parents decided to name their daughter after the song after seeing Joe Cocker perform the song live during his 1984 Australian tour.

She added that choosing such a musical name was a surprising choice for her parents, who preferred listening to talk radio shows.

“My mom was pregnant and they went to the concert and they both said, ‘It’s Delta,’” she said.

‘They didn’t have any other name and again, it’s really bizarre because my parents aren’t musical. They listen to talkback.

‘They may listen to a bit more music now, but back in the day, John Farnham, Joe Cocker and Jive Bunny were the most popular artists in our house.’

Delta recently revealed that despite her engagement to boyfriend Matthew Copley, wedding plans have taken a back seat due to her busy schedule.

The singer, who got engaged last year, is so busy with her busy life that the couple still haven’t decided to plan their big day.

In an exclusive interview with WHO magazine, Delta confessed: ‘Don’t ask about the wedding. It’s been very busy, but a great kind of busy, the kind I’ve never been so happy about.’

She said the couple hasn’t finalized any details yet, but they’re focused on making the day perfect for themselves and their loved ones.

“It’s about planning the day so that everyone feels invited, but we keep looking for what the perfect day is for us.”

Delta and Matthew, who have been in a relationship since 2017, got engaged during a romantic holiday to Malta last September.

Matthew proposed as the sun set over the Mediterranean Sea. Delta shared the joyous moment with her fans by posting a heartwarming photo of the couple toasting with a kiss and a glass of bubbly.
