It’s a bit wet here…

Fans have been scrambling for cover around Melbourne Park all afternoon as it appears this severe weather shows no signs of slowing down.

Play on the outdoor courts has also been suspended until after 5pm, but unfortunately the weather shows no signs of easing this afternoon as rain falls outside on the show courts.

In fact, I understand that thousands of people in the Melbourne area were left without power after the unexpected storm caused flash flooding in the city.

Cars across Victoria have been affected by flooding and some train services have now been canceled due to the crazy conditions.

About 25 mm of rain has fallen in the past four hours after the heavy storm.

The Bureau of Meteorology, Vicotria has issued a severe weather warning for parts of the city, where thunderstorms are now working their way through Melbourne, heading east towards the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges.

Good afternoon (or good morning if you’re just waking up in the UK!)

Welcome to the opening day of the Australian Open 2025!

It was a very wet and stormy day here in Australia. We saw all four seasons at Melbourne Park today and the rain still hasn’t stopped!

Thunder and lightning have also moved in and the city skyline was shrouded in dark gray clouds earlier this afternoon.

We have been blessed with balmy temperatures this week, with temperatures reaching 31ºC in the city center yesterday.

But as 25mm of rain has fallen in the last four hours, there isn’t much tennis being played on the outdoor courts at the moment, and as I just got soaked on the way to the media center, it doesn’t look like there will be much tennis being played. this week!

But that doesn’t stop the party! Fans around Melbourne Park are still enjoying the atmosphere and there is plenty of tennis on the agenda this afternoon.

Stay tuned as we bring you the latest news, updates and quirky stories from Melbourne Park.
