Medvedev meltdown!
Wow! Daniil Medvedev completely lost it on Rod Laver!
The Russian star had lost two sets to his 23-year-old opponent Kasidit Samrej, who is also ranked number 418 on the ATP Tour.
But the Russian’s frustrations got the better of him during the third set, with the world number 5 brutally slamming his racket into the center of the net after losing a point.
He broke his racket and the camera mounted in the middle of the net which now shows no images!
Raducanu takes the win despite service issues
So it looks like Emma Raducanu has made some changes to her service game coming into this week’s Australian Open.
The British star got her tournament off to a flying start earlier this afternoon by beating Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6 7-6.
Although she had to fight hard in the match, the 22-year-old played some of her best tennis to surpass Alexandrova in both tiebreaks.
But after some adjustments, Raducanu seemed to struggle with her service game, making fifteen double faults.
Mail Sport’s Matthew Lambert sums up what has been a great start from the British star.
Showtime!
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Gael Monfils provide a show for fans currently performing on Court 3!
I can hear the roar all the way from the media center too!
However, it was Monfils who would claim victory 7-6 6-3 6-7 6-7 6-4.
Norrie: ‘I have hardly practiced’
Cam Norrie fell ill during the warm-up event in Auckland last week, with the British star admitting after his defeat to Matteo Berrettini that he had barely practiced for today’s match.
I wasn’t able to prepare as well as I could. I was quite ill in Auckland and then came here. Just barely practiced.
To be honest, I felt the ball so well. The preseason was excellent. It was a little unfortunate with the timing. I definitely gave myself the best chance. Just hit the wall after an hour and a bit. I couldn’t stay sharp on the field.
It’s disappointing. Yes, it is what it is. The most important thing is that I can get my health back to 100 percent and get some rest. It’s just hard to keep that up today.
What do professional tennis players eat before a match?
Frances Tiafoe shocked some fans yesterday when he appeared to throw up on the court during his first round win against Arthur Rinderknech.
He put the moment down to being ‘over-hydrated’, having ‘mixed a lot of electrolytes’, before claiming he hadn’t eaten since 10am, before playing for four hours.
It showed just how tough a sport tennis really is, with professional players placing great emphasis on their nutrition and hydration to ensure they perform to the best standards on the court.
Emma Raducanu has just revealed what she eats before a competition to keep her functioning at the top.
It’s a very early wake-up call. I think I have trouble eating when I open my eyes first.
I was actually quite light this morning. I just had some berries and a cup of coffee before practice. After practice I would just eat toast, like regular toast with honey and a banana. Pure carb load.
I couldn’t stomach some rice and salmon. I’ll make sure I get my salmon after this and eat it for the day!
Raducanu: ‘My serve had a mind of its own!’
Emma Raducanu spoke after her win about the changes she made to her service game at the Australian Open.
Yeah, honestly, I’m not sure what I changed in my service today. I think it had a mind of its own…
I will definitely think about it, look into it and get back to you.
Raducanu served 15 double faults and although her percentage points won on the first serve was a solid 67 percent, her profitability after her second serve was much lower: 30 percent.
I think I hit a lot of good first serves in the first set. I hit a few aces. At the same time I hit one [lot of] double faults.
I think it got a lot harder as the balls got heavier. As I think more and more came, it wasn’t easy to refocus, but I knew that even if I was down, I would get great returns. It was good today to be able to rely on other parts of my game that I know are quite strong.
I’m just really proud that I didn’t let it affect me too much and let the game get away from me.
It’s a hot day here in Melbourne Park!
Good afternoon (or good morning if you wake up in the UK)!
It’s a hot day here in Melbourne, it’s 26ºC, but it feels much hotter there.
In my travels this morning, I’ve seen fans running through sprinklers and standing in long lines at the peach ice cream stand next to Kia Arena.
It was also a busy day on the track!
British fans will be pleased to hear that Emma Raducanu has advanced to the second round of the Australian Open, beating Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6 7-6.
There are also some big matches coming your way later today with newly engaged couple Katie Boulter and Alex de Minaur in action!
But first, let’s recap what Emma Raducanu won today… this is the moment she took the win!
