Australian man wins $40million Powerball prize shares plan for money

Hard-working Aussie who won the $40 MILLION Powerball prize reveals what he did with his fortune after he left work the next day – and how his luck has endured

  • Since then he has invested in several racehorses
  • Millionaire also bought a red sports car

A lucky Australian who became an overnight millionaire after winning a $40 million jackpot has decided to invest some of his money into buying racehorses.

Cliff Little, a former disability worker, resigned just hours after receiving the life-changing news that he had hit the full Powerball jackpot.

In the four years since, Mr. Little has used the money to buy properties for his children, a red sports car for himself and several racehorses.

“When I saw them come out – 1, 2, 3, 12, 20 – I said ‘ooh I’m getting more than my money back.’ The man called, I said “who the hell are you?”, he was from Lotto and he confirmed it. I couldn’t sleep anymore,” he told 9News.

Taking early retirement, Mr Little now has ample time to relax at his home in Cairns and indulge in one of his passions, watching horse racing on TV.

He then decided to use some of his millions to buy several racehorses and one of them – Cifrado – has already earned $881,000 in prize money winning the Spirit of Boom Classic and the BRC Sires Produce Stakes in his last two starts.

Toowoomba trainer Rex Lipp bought the colt on Mr Little’s behalf and admitted he doesn’t even know what the millionaire looks like.

“I’ve never met him, I’ve never seen a picture of him, but I told Cliff this is the only colt I like for sale and he almost left it to me,” he said.

On Saturday, Cifrado will participate in the prestigious JJ Atkins Plate, and thanks to his strong bloodlines, he also looks set to have a lucrative stud career ahead of him.

Mr Little said winning a race and winning the Lotto felt very different.

“People might scoff at this, but the money is great, it’s only minor when you see the cups,” he said, proudly showing off his trophies.

“Lotto is a game of chance, as everyone knows, but winning a Group 1 with the trainer training the horse and preparing the jockey to go along, that’s the excitement, the tactics in it and stuff like that.”

After winning the prize, Mr. Little said, “I can’t sleep tonight!”

“I thought I’d check my ticket before bed. I was pretty calm. I knew I had some numbers and thought I might have won division six.

“Then I looked again and thought ‘no, you b******s are wrong!’ I looked again. Then I took a shower.’

“Actually, when the phone rang, my cat ran to the phone. She never does. I was really surprised. That’s why I picked up the phone.

“It’s hard to believe that only one person won it and that one person is me!”

‘It is awesome. You dream about these things, but when it happens you don’t believe it,” he said.

Australians will have a chance to win their own $40 million in Thursday night’s Powerball. Entries for draw 1412 close at 7:30pm (AEST).
