I’m an Australian living in the UK – I can’t believe the huge difference in British chocolate compared to the treats Down Under

First introduced in 1905, Cadbury sells more than 350 million chocolate bars every year and is now loved all over the world.

But an Australian living in Britain used TikTok to share a huge difference she noticed between Cadbury bars in Britain and Down Under.

Jess Chate, 21, filmed herself in a Sainsbury’s chocolate shop three days ago and her sweet reveal has been viewed more than 2.9 million times on TikTok.

The Aussie, an aspiring singer, points her phone camera at the stacks of Cadbury on the supermarket shelves and says: ‘I just wanted to draw attention to the fact that in Britain they produce their chocolate in landscape form.’

That’s all it took to send TikTok users into a frenzy and spark a heated debate in the comments about the proper orientation of chocolate bars.

One TikTok user said: ‘This is driving me crazy. Portrait is the only way.’ Others claimed that eating chocolate in the British ‘landscape style’ would make them feel like they were ‘eating a Wonka bar’.

Another Australian living in London said: ‘I can’t believe I never noticed this.’ Someone said: ‘The landscape is also beautiful in South Africa.’

“It’s the same in Germany,” another added.

Original creator Jess uploaded a follow-up video today explaining her new theory. Maybe landscape chocolate is a ‘European thing’?

“Great news, I’m in France,” she said as she looked at the chocolate on display. ‘We have discovered that the chocolate is indeed in portrait here.

‘Crazy things. The small differences remain.’

While many users confirmed Jess’s theory, claiming that chocolate is sold in horizontal packaging in Finland, for example, others disagreed.

One commenter threw a spanner in the works, saying, “I remember going to Germany and discovering that chocolate was square – neither landscape nor portrait.”

Another wrote: ‘In Sweden, milk chocolate is landscape and dark chocolate is portrait.’

Femail has contacted Cadbury for comment.

The chocolate fiasco between landscape and portrait continued on BBC Radio One.

Presenter Jamie Laing joined the debate and said: ‘I know exactly what she is [Jess] resources.

‘If you go into the sweets section of the supermarket or the newsagent or whatever, chocolate in Britain is turned on its side. It is the longitudinal directions, it is landscape.’

But Laing, who founded the candy company Candy Kittens, came up with a whole new theory. “Actually, fancy chocolate in Britain is usually a portrait,” he said. ‘Like a Lindt.’
