A little girl who suddenly fell into a prolonged coma, despite “all medical evidence indicating she should have been awake and well”, has been diagnosed with a rare condition.
The girl’s mother, Allanah Alison (also known as Allanah Harris), shared a heartbreaking update on Sunday, revealing that her daughter Daisy has tuberous sclerosis and has been in a coma for more than 100 hours.
In this condition, benign tumors grow in the brain and other major organs. This can lead to other complications, such as seizures and developmental delays.
The lifestyle influencer told her 223,000 followers that her once “happy and cheerful” toddler was diagnosed in June after she noticed an apparent absence of seizures, which present as “staring” in children.
The mother of four said the seizures were becoming more frequent. Daisy was having multiple seizures a day and when she insisted on being tested at the hospital, she was ‘immediately diagnosed with epilepsy’.
Doctors later discovered, after a brain scan, that the epilepsy was caused by tuberous sclerosis. The condition also caused other brain disorders, including focal cortical dysplasia, infantile spasms and encephalopathy.
The toddler had recently been sleeping up to 22 hours a day, until she fell into a coma a few days ago.
“Daisy has been unresponsive for over 100 hours and we have no idea when she will wake herself up. It could be tomorrow or it could be six weeks from now. It is something she can only do safely when she is ready,” Alison said.
Queensland mother Allanah Alison shared a heartbreaking update about her baby girl Daisy
The girl has fallen into a coma and doctors do not know how or when she will wake up.
The Queenslander said her daughter had “countless needles and blood tests while she was ‘asleep’ and she never looked up”.
Unfortunately, there are no medications or stimulants that Daisy can safely use to wake up.
‘Even after Daisy decides to wake up, we still have a long way to go to figure out what causes this level of sleep and slow brain activity.’
Mrs Alison said doctors were already ‘going overboard’ to try to understand why Daisy fell into a coma.
‘All medical evidence to date indicates that Daisy should be awake and healthy, apart of course from her severe developmental delays, but unfortunately this is not the case.
‘Investigations are underway and information about Daisy is being passed on rapidly to other hospitals, not only in Australia but in other countries, to find answers.’
The lifestyle influencer said doctors worldwide are searching for answers about Daisy’s condition
In addition, doctors had diagnosed Daisy with tuberous sclerosis exactly four years after her older sister had died.
The bereaved family thanks their sympathizers and supporters.
A GoFundMe was founded by Daisy’s grandmother to help her pay for medical bills.
“It has taken a toll financially and it has become difficult to arrange care for the other three children because of the long periods they are in hospital,” said Karen George.
‘Allanah and Brock will have to move to the Sunshine Coast where the support network is significantly larger.
‘No contribution is too small and will help this beautiful family.
“They will donate any excess funds to the RMH and TSC foundations,” she said.
