Australian Idol star Matt Corby criticizes musicians starting careers on TikTok: ‘It has to be backed up with hard work and craftsmanship’
Matt Corby has been critical of musicians starting their careers on TikTok, despite the fact that he got his start in the industry by starring in Australian Idol in 2007.
The social media app has boosted the careers of many singers, including Olivia Roderigo, who was previously known for her roles on The Disney Channel but had several hit singles from her debut album after they went viral on TikTok.
Along with many new artists who started using the video sharing app, Miley Cyrus also topped the charts with her new single Flowers after it was a huge hit on the social media platform.
Despite the proven success musicians have had thanks to the popular app, Matt said he doesn’t think it’s a sustainable way for artists to start their careers.
The ARIA Award-winning singer told the NCA Newswire that going viral is ‘fleeting’ and that a successful music career must be backed with ‘hard work and skill’.

He added that a small viral snippet of a song can’t give listeners a good overview of the track.
‘Want to go see a show like that? You don’t know it yet, there isn’t much trust between the player and the musician,” he said.
“You don’t get the actual experience of an artist with them editing a video of themselves singing a song.
“It’s a great way if you’re a record label to find a one in 1,000 talent, that’s great.

“But there’s still a lot of hard work to be done to develop that artist and connect them with the right people and put out the right records and get them in line and get them to play shows.”
However, the indie rocker, who was only 16 when he came in second on Australian Idol, admitted that it would be very difficult for him to launch a music career now.
told the daily telegraph that there is “so much oversaturation” with music in 2023 that it is very difficult to break through all that noise.
“No one can listen to all that music,” he said. “It’s a completely different landscape than it was 15 years ago when I started.”
