An Australian tourist who visited Bali and heroically ran into a burning building in only his shorts has led a press conference while casually sipping his beer.
Jack Bach, 30, from Frankston in Melbourne was determined not to let the spotlight disrupt his holiday when he answered questions about risking his life for locals when he came across the blaze on a high street.
“We saw the Balinese ladies and children crying and they were about to lose all their belongings, so we thought we had better do what we could,” Bach told 7 News, beer in hand, on Monday.
Frankston’s Jack Bach is hailed as a hero after he drove into a burning building not long after arriving in Bali and saved a shop’s entire stock (pictured talking to reporters while drinking a beer)
The fire destroyed a clothing store and an art gallery and was sparked by an electrical fault. There were no injuries in the fire (photo)
He entered the burning clothing store about 20 times and, along with half a dozen other tourists, managed to salvage most of the stock by dragging it out.
The concrete worker by trade then went next door where an art gallery appeared to be on fire and successfully saved a number of paintings.
The fire broke out Saturday afternoon, not long after Mr Bach and his traveling companion, Nathan Garrard, landed in the Indonesian holiday hotspot.
The roof of the shopping street eventually collapsed when locals tried to douse the flames with hoses.
The fire brigade arrived a short time later and had the fire under control.
The fire was caused by an electrical fault in a house above the shops.
Fortunately, no one was hurt and Mr. Bach and Mr. Garrard are now enjoying the rest of their holiday.
